Bruce Hampton

Hampton begann seine musikalische Laufbahn Ende der 1960er Jahre. Er gründete 1968 die Hampton Grease Band, die erste bekannte Rockband in Atlanta, die mit Grateful Dead aus San Francisco tourte. Mit der Band nahm er 1971 sein erstes Album Music to Eat bei Columbia Records auf. In den 1980er Jahren leitete er die Band The Late Bronze Age, Ende der 1980er Jahre The Aquarium Rescue Unit (ARU). Mit letzterer nahm er u. a. ein Livealbum mit dem Keyboarder Chuck Leavell auf. Daneben trat er mit Bands wie Widespread Panic, Phish und Blues Traveler auf. Mit ARU nahm er ab 1992 an den jährlichen H.O.R.D.E.-Touren (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) teil.

Am 30. April 2017 brach Hampton während seines Auftritts bei einem Konzert zu seinem 70. Geburtstag im Fox Theatre in Atlanta zusammen und starb kurz darauf im Emory University Hospital Midtown. Jerry Grillo veröffentlichte 2021 die "Basically True Biography" The Music and Mythocracy of Col. Bruce Hampton.^[1]
