Das 17. Fantasy Filmfest (2003) fand in der Zeit vom Mittwoch, den 23. Juli, bis Mittwoch, den 30. Juli 2003 im Cinema in München, vom Mittwoch, den 30. Juli, bis Mittwoch, den 6. August 2003 im Metropol in Stuttgart und im Cinecitta in Nürnberg, vom Mittwoch, den 6. August, bis Mittwoch, den 13. August 2003 im Turm-Palast in Frankfurt und in der Residenz in Köln, sowie vom Mittwoch, den 13. August, bis Mittwoch, den 20. August 2003 im Cinestar im Sony Center in Berlin und im Alabama Kino in Hamburg statt. Es bot eine Zusammenstellung von Klassikern aus den verschiedenen Genres des phantastischen Films sowie Welturaufführungen und Produktionen in deutscher Erstaufführung. Neben dem eigentlichen Programm wurden diverse Kurz- und Vorfilme gezeigt. Alle Filme wurden in allen Festivalstädten gezeigt.
Mit der Nacht der 1000 Schreie wurde als Vorläufer der Fantasy Filmfest Nights erstmals ein Programm gestartet, welches ausgewählte Filme bereits im Frühjahr in den Festivalstädten zeigte.
