Halldór Hermannsson

Nach dem Besuch der Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík begann Halldór Hermannsson 1898 an der Universität Kopenhagen mit dem Studium der Rechtswissenschaft. In Kopenhagen lernte er Daniel Willard Fiske (1831–1904) kennen, der über lange Zeit Direktor der Bibliothek der Cornell University war, Island besuchte und im Laufe der Zeit eine äußerst umfangreiche Spezialbibliothek mit Werken aus und über Island zusammentrug. Fiske suchte für die Erschließung dieser Bibliothek, die nach seinem Tod an die Cornell University übergehen sollte, einen Bibliothekar und Bibliografen. 1905 wurde Hermannsson zum Bibliothekar dieser Bibliothek in Ithaca (New York) ernannt. Außerdem sollte er an der Cornell University Unterricht in skandinavischen Sprachen geben. Neben seiner bibliothekarischen Tätigkeit für die Fiske Icelandic Collection^[2] arbeitete er als Dozent, Assistenzprofessor und seit 1924 als Professor an dieser Universität bis zu seinem Eintritt in den Ruhestand 1946. Er schuf eine neue Schriftenreihe (Islandica) für eine Vielzahl seiner überwiegend bibliografischen Veröffentlichungen zur isländischen Literatur.

Im Jahre 1930 verlieh ihm die Háskóli Íslands die Ehrendoktorwürde. Für seine Verdienste um die Erforschung der isländischen Literatur und seine Lehrtätigkeit wurde ihm das Großritterkreuz des Falkenordens verliehen.
