Jeffry A. Simpson ist ein US-amerikanischer Sozial- und Persönlichkeitspsychologe und Professor an der University of Minnesota.[1][2][3]

Leben

Seinen Bachelor of Arts in Politikwissenschaft und Psychologie erwarb er 1981an der Universität von Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. 1986 promovierte er in Psychologie mit den Nebenfächern Statistik and Methodologie zum Ph.D. an der University of Minnesota.

Seine berufliche Karriere begann 1986 an der Texas A&M University. 2004 kehrte er an die University of Minnesota zurück, wo er seitdem Professor für Psychologie ist. Hier leitet er das Promotionsprogramm „Interpersonal Relationships Research“ und er ist seit 2018 Vorsitzender des Fachbereichs Psychologie.

Werk

Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen im Erwachsenenalter (Vertrauen, Partnerwahl, Bindungsmuster in Paarbeziehungen), Evolution und Sozialverhalten (strategischer Pluralismus bei der Partnerwahl) sowie sozialer Einfluss. Er untersuchte auch, wie frühkindliche Erfahrungen die Gesundheit und das Verhalten im Erwachsenenalter prägen. Durch seine Mitarbeit an der Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation, die Individuen von der Geburt bis ins Erwachsenenalter begleitet, erarbeitete er Einblicke in die Frage, wie die Kindheit uns zu dem Menschen macht, der wir später sind, im speziellen die Beziehungen zwischen frühkindlichen Entwicklungserfahrungen und Gesundheit, Beziehungsfähigkeit slowie Erziehungskompetenzen im Erwachsenenalter. In seinen Forschungen zum sozialen Einfluss untersucht er, wann, wie und warum Individuen verschiedene Strategien der sozialen Beeinflussung einsetzen, um ihre Partner zu überzeugen, und welche Strategien in unterschiedlichen Situationen tendenziell effektiver sind. In seinen Arbeiten zu persönlichen Beziehungen und körperlicher Gesundheit untersuchte er, wie Partner versuchen, die Gesundheit des jeweils anderen zu beeinflussen, und mit welchem Erfolg dies geschieht.
