Jennifer Whiting

Nach dem B.A. in Philosophie im Jahr 1978 am Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, setzte Whiting ihre Studien an der Cornell University fort, an der sie 1981 einen M.A. erwarb und 1984 mit einer unveröffentlichten Dissertation über Individual Forms in Aristotle^[1] bei Terence Irwin zum Ph.D. promoviert wurde.

Sie war von 1983 bis 1986 Assistant Professor of Philosophy an der Harvard University und wechselte im Anschluss an die University of Pittsburgh, an der sie 1991 eine Festanstellung (tenure) erhielt. 1997 wurde sie auf eine Professur an der Cornell University berufen, 2003 als Chancellor Jackman Professor of Philosophy an die University of Toronto. 2015 kehrte sie an die University of Pittsburgh zurück, an der sie inzwischen emeritiert ist. 2007 erhielt sie den Konrad-Adenauer-Forschungspreis der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung und verbrachte das akademische Jahr 2007/2008 als Gastprofessor an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin^[2]. Eine Schülerin ist Marta Jiménez.

Whiting hat zur Ethik und Metaphysik des Aristoteles sowie zur Moralpsychologie Platons und zu aktuellen Themen wie etwa der Freundschaft und der personalen Identität veröffentlicht. Dabei arbeitete sie eng mit dem US-amerikanischen Philosophen Sydney Shoemaker (1931–2022) und der neuseeländischen Philosophin Annette Baier (1929–2012) zusammen.
