Jesse L. Byock

Jesse L. Byock (* 23. April 1945) ist ein US-amerikanischer Skandinavist und Hochschullehrer, der auch die isländische Staatsbürgerschaft hat.[1]
Leben und Wirken
Jesse L. Byock studierte Geschichte an der University of Vermont und erwarb dort 1967 den Bachelorgrad. Anschließend studierte er bis 1968 Rechtswissenschaft an der Georgetown University, 1970/71 Isländische Literatur und Geschichte an der Universität Islands und 1971/72 mittelalterliche Geschichte und Literatur an der University of California, Los Angeles. 1972/73 verbrachte er an der Universität Lund und widmete sich dort vor allem der Geschichte der Wikinger. Zuletzt studierte er an der Harvard University und promovierte dort 1978, hier lag sein Schwerpunkt auf Altnordistik und der mittelalterlichen Geschichte Skandinaviens. Als Hochschullehrer wirkte Byock an der Harvard University, vor allem aber von 1977 bis 2015 an der University of California, Los Angeles. Dort widmete er sich als Professor der Altnordistik und der mittelalterlichen Geschichte Skandinaviens. Lehraufträge nahm er außerdem an der Universität Islands wahr. Seit längerer Zeit betätigt sich Byock in Island auch als Archäologe, ihm wurde 2005 die isländische Staatsangehörigkeit verliehen.[2]
