Bis zur landesweiten Neuordnung der französischen Kantone im März 2015 gehörten zum Kanton Avallon die 16 Gemeinden Annay-la-Côte, Annéot, Avallon, Domecy-sur-le-Vault, Étaule, Girolles, Island, Lucy-le-Bois, Magny, Menades, Pontaubert, Sauvigny-le-Bois, Sermizelles, Tharot, Thory und Vault-de-Lugny. Sein Zuschnitt entsprach einer Fläche von 196,99 km2.
