Nathaniel Bliss

Nathaniel Bliss (* 28. November 1700 in Bisley, Gloucestershire; † 2. September 1764 in Oxford) war ein englischer Astronom. Er war von 1762 bis 1764 königlicher Astronom (Astronomer Royal).
Leben und Wirken
Bliss war der Sohne seines gleichnamigen Vaters Nathaniel Bliss, einem Wirkwarenhändler. Er immatrikulierte sich am 10. Oktober 1716[1] am Pembroke College in Oxford. Dort graduierte Bliss 1720 zum Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) und 1723 zum Master of Arts (M.A.). Kurz darauf heiratete er Elizabeth Hillman (1700–1779). 1736 wurde Bliss Rektor der St Ebbe’s Church in Oxford.
1742 wurde er Nachfolger von Edmond Halley als Savilian Professor of Geometry an der Universität Oxford. 1762 wurde er als Nachfolger von James Bradley der vierte Astronomer Royal.
Ehrungen
Am 20. Mai 1742 wurde Bliss als Mitglied („Fellow“) in die Royal Society gewählt.[2]
Im Jahr 2000 wurde von der IAU der Mondkrater Bliss nach ihm benannt.
