William S. Rholes

Er erwarb 1973 einen B.A. in Psychologie an der University of Texas at Austin. 1978 promovierte er, ebenfalls in Psychologie, zum (Ph.D.) an der Princeton University.

Seine berufliche Karriere spielte sich an der Texas A&M University ab: Von 1978 bis 1983 war er hier Assistenzprofessor für Psychologie, von September 1983 bis 1989 außerordentlicher Professor für Psychologie und ab 1989 Professor für Psychologie. Von 1994 bis 1998 war er stellvertretender Dekan der Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften und von 2002 bis 2006 war er Abteilungsleiter im Fachbereich Psychologie.

Zu Beginn seiner Karriere forschte er intensiv zu Themen des „Primen“ auf die Eindrucksbildung. Zu seinen frühen Arbeiten zählt das 1977 mit E. Tory Higgins und Carl R. Jones durchgeführte „Donald-Experiment“ zum Priming-Effekt, das zu den klassischen Experimente in der Psychologie gehört. Mit ihm wurde gezeigt, wie zuvor aktivierte Informationen, sog. kognitive Schemata, die Interpretation mehrdeutiger Verhaltensweisen anderer Personen beeinflussen. Das Experiment belegt, dass Informationen, die zuvor im Gedächtnis aktiviert wurden, als Interpretationsrahmen für neue, unklare Informationen dienen.

Seine weiteren Arbeiten befassen sich mit vielfältigen Themen wie Bindungstheorie, Familiendynamik und -beziehungen, Evolutionspsychologie und menschliches Verhalten, psychosoziale und emotionale Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen, psychische Gesundheit von Müttern während Schwangerschaft und Wochenbett, Kindesmisshandlung und Trauma sowie familiäre Unterstützung bei Krankheit. Er untersuchte, wie Partner in stressigen Situationen Unterstützung suchen oder geben oder auch den Übergang zur Elternschaft: Ein wesentlicher Teil seiner Forschung analysiert, wie sich Bindungsorientierungen während des Übergangs zum ersten Kind verändern und wie sie die Beziehungszufriedenheit sowie depressive Symptome vorhersagen. In seinen Arbeiten zur Bindungstheorie im Erwachsenenalter wird untersucht, wie Beziehungen die Persönlichkeit beeinflussen und wie die Persönlichkeit wiederum nachfolgende Beziehungen prägt. So konnte er beispielsweise zeigen, dass Männer mit unsicherem Bindungsstil im Laufe der Zeit zunehmend unzufriedener mit ihrer Ehe wurden, wenn sie sich stark in der Kinderbetreuung engagierten. Männer mit sicherem Bindungsstil blieben von den Aufgaben der Kinderbetreuung unbeeinflusst. Ein weiteres Ergebnis seiner Studien war, dass Männer und Frauen eher zu Depressionen neigen, wenn sie ihren Partner als unwillig oder unfähig wahrnehmen, ihnen emotionale Unterstützung zu bieten, dies traf jedoch nur auf Menschen mit einem ängstlichen Bindungsstil zu. Personen mit einem sicheren und einem vermeidenden Bindungsstil wurden nicht durch ihre Wahrnehmung der Verfügbarkeit emotionaler Unterstützung beeinflusst.
