Vivian Fine

Vivian Fine (* 28. September 1913 in Chicago/Illinois; † 20. März 2000 in Bennington/Vermont) war eine US-amerikanische Komponistin, Pianistin und Musikpädagogin.
Leben
Fine hatte als Kind Klavierunterricht bei ihrer Mutter und war fünfjährig die jüngste Schülerin, die jemals ein Stipendium für das Chicago Musical College erhielt. Im Alter von dreizehn Jahren wurde sie Klavierschülerin der Skrjabinschülerin Djane Lavoie-Herz. Ihre ersten Kompositionen, Solo for Oboe und Four Pieces for Two Flutes, entstanden 1926 und wurden beim Pan-American Association of Composers’ Concert und beim International Society of Contemporary Composers’ Concert aufgeführt. Sie studierte dann Komposition bei Ruth Crawford und Kontrapunkt bei Adolf Weidig (1926–28) und vervollkommnete ihr Kompositionsstudium zwischen 1934 und 1942 bei Roger Sessions.
Ab 1931 lebte Fine in New York. Sie gehörte dort Aaron Coplands Young Composers Group an und nahm 1932 am ersten Yaddo Festival teil. Sie arbeitete als Begleiterin und Komponistin für die Tanzkompagnies von Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman und Hanya Holm und profilierte sich mit Uraufführungen von Werken Charles Ives’, Aaron Coplands, Henry Brants, Henry Cowells und Dane Rudhyars als bekannte Interpretin zeitgenössischer Klaviermusik in New York. 1937 gehörte sie zu den Gründern der American Composers Alliance, deren Vizepräsidentin sie von 1961 bis 1965 war. Ihr Klavierstudium setzte sie von 1937 bis 1946 bei Abby Whiteside fort. Bei George Szell studierte sie 1943 Orchestration.
Von 1945 bis 1948 unterrichtete Fine Klavier an der New York University, 1951 gab sie Sommerkurse an der State University of New York at Potsdam. Von 1953 bis 1960 war sie künstlerische Leiterin der Rothschild Foundation, in deren Auftrag sie A Guide to the Life Expectancy of a Rose komponierte. Für Martha Grahams Kompagnie komponierte sie 1959 das Ballett Alcestis. Von 1964 bis 1987 unterrichtete sie Komposition am Bennington College in Vermont. 1980 wurde sie zum Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Letters gewählt. 2000 starb sie im Alter von 86 Jahren bei einem Autounfall.[1]
