Choate has been accused of patient abuse and neglect since the late 1990s,[5] and faced scrutiny by local media and public officials in 2022 following detailed accounts of violence against patients and lying to state investigators. Though in the past 3 years out of 1,500 abuse allegations made only 3 percent of them were deemed true.[6][2][7]
