Early life and education
Morrissey was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He demonstrated an early interest in digital technology and web infrastructure, successfully developing his first website at the age of fifteen and initiating an independent web development business at sixteen.[1] He completed his secondary education at St George's College in Kingston. Following his graduation, Morrissey relocated to the United States, where he attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in Florida, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design.[2][3]
Career
JamaicansMusic.com
In 2008, while completing his studies in Florida, Morrissey created JamaicansMusic.com.[4] Initially designed as a personal project to stay connected to his home country, the website rapidly evolved into a comprehensive digital media hub dedicated to the documentation of Jamaica's musical landscape.[5] The platform featured music streaming, artist biographies, discographies, and global industry news.[6] By utilizing early social media algorithms and precise geotargeting, Morrissey significantly expanded the platform's international audience.[7]
In the summer of 2010, Morrissey traveled to Indonesia to formally launch the brand in the Asian market, establishing a significant localized demographic of reggae enthusiasts.[8] The platform integrated innovative interactive digital features for the era, including a virtual turntable mixer that attracted thousands of users and a Facebook-based video game titled "SongWrita," which utilized the likenesses of prominent Jamaican artists such as Vybz Kartel and Mavado.[9] By October 2011, JamaicansMusic.com had surpassed one million followers on Facebook, ranking within the top 40 global pages in the website category and becoming the most followed Jamaican corporate entity on the platform at that time.[10]
ESIROM Limited
Leveraging the audience development strategies and technical infrastructure utilized for his music platform, Morrissey transitioned into corporate digital consulting.[11] In 2015, he founded ESIROM Limited (an acronym for Encouraging Social Influence, Redefining Online Marketing).[12] The agency provides comprehensive social media strategy, full-stack web and application development, multimedia production, and online advertising.[13] Under Morrissey's management, the agency acquired a massive portfolio of major regional clients, including Victoria Mutual, Seprod, Guinness, Salada Foods, and the Jamaican Ministry of Tourism.[14][15]
Morrissey successfully guided the agency's expansion outside of the Caribbean basin, establishing an operational presence in the Asian market. He established a team in Indonesia focused on brand strategy and photography, and a team in Singapore dedicated to 2-D and 3-D animation services.[16] In March 2019, utilizing the Jamaica Promotions (JAMPRO) Business of Sustainability for Studios (BOSS) Programme, he traveled to India and successfully negotiated consultancy and technological outsourcing agreements with several international software firms.[17] To support local infrastructure, Morrissey also oversaw the construction of a multipurpose production studio in Kingston, equipped with a permanent set bar, designed to be rented by independent Jamaican creatives.[18]
Philanthropy and environmental advocacy
To foster creative exchange and support emerging artists, Morrissey established the "Bali Fellowship" (also known as the Sama-Sama Residency). The program fully funds Jamaican creatives—including filmmakers, writers, and musicians—to travel to Bali, Indonesia, for a two-month self-directed cultural residency.[19]
In December 2022, Morrissey founded the ESIROM Foundation, the official charitable and environmental advocacy arm of his agency.[20] As director, he initiated the Kingston Harbour Eco-Restoration Initiative (KHERI). Utilizing custom-engineered waste collection pontoons, the initiative successfully removed nearly 10 tonnes of plastic pollution from the marine environment.[21] In partnership with Recycling Partners of Jamaica, the foundation upcycles the collected Type 2 and Type 5 plastics into commercial consumer products, such as 100% recycled sunglasses targeted at the tourism industry.[22]
Additionally, Morrissey partnered with Reggae Sumfest, the Caribbean's largest music festival, to implement the event's first comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment and execute waste management sustainability campaigns.[23] He also served as a primary organizer for the Earth Hour JA acoustic concerts, utilizing musical performances to mobilize national awareness regarding climate action.[24]
Awards and recognition
Morrissey's work in the digital economy has received significant regional and international recognition. In 2013, he was named to the Gleaner-Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica '50UnderFifty' list of emerging entrepreneurial leaders.[25] In 2018, he was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year by the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce.[26] The following year, he was awarded Global Entrepreneur of the Year at the International Business and Academic Excellence (IBAE) Awards in Dubai, marking the only North American agency to win at the ceremony.[27][28]
Under his direction, ESIROM received a Silver Award for Consumer Website from the Caribbean Advertising Federation in 2020, and a Silver ADDY Award in 2024 for the execution of the Reggae Sumfest Climate Change Initiative.[29] In 2024, Morrissey was nominated for the Ernst & Young (EY) Entrepreneur of the Year Jamaica Award in the emerging business category.[30] In 2025, the ESIROM Foundation's KHERI project won the national Energy Globe Award for Jamaica.[31]
