Life and Career
Naterer was born in Toronto and spent his early life in Oshawa, Ontario. He earned a Bachelor of Mathematics (BMath) in Applied Mathematics in 1989, Master of Applied Science (MASc) in 1991, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering in 1995, all from the University of Waterloo.
Naterer led the creation of the Catherine Callbeck Centre for Entrepreneurship in 2024 at UPEI to expand experiential learning opportunities for students. [2] He previously co-founded the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) at Memorial University in 2015, [3] which has supported hundreds of startup ventures, many of which have achieved international recognition.[4] MCE was named among the top five emerging entrepreneurship centers in the world by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers. [5]
Nationally and internationally, Naterer has held prominent leadership roles in education and research, including as Chair of Engineering Deans Canada (formerly National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science). [6] Since 2014, Naterer has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the AIAA Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer. [7] [8]
Research
Naterer's contributions to energy systems, heat transfer, hydrogen production, and thermodynamics include over 340 archival technical publications and six patents. Naterer has authored three technical books:
- Naterer, G. F. (2021), Advanced Heat Transfer, ISBN 9781003206125, 3rd Edition, CRC Press.
- Naterer, G. F., Dincer, I., Zamfirescu, C. (2013), Hydrogen Production from Nuclear Energy, ISBN 9781447149378, Springer-Verlag.
- Naterer, G. F., Camberos, J. (2008). Entropy Based Design and Analysis of Fluids Engineering Systems, ISBN 9780429127564, CRC Press.
He has been named in the Stanford University list of Top 2% of Scientists in the World. [9] Naterer's research contributions include a number of highly cited articles and book chapters leading to an h-index of over 66. [10]
Naterer is recognized internationally for leading a research network of university and industry partners in five countries that developed the world's first large-scale unit operations of a copper-chlorine cycle of thermochemical water splitting for clean hydrogen production. The technology developed by the team is a potentially major solution to the problem of climate change. [11]
Awards and Honors
Naterer has received several awards for his contributions to engineering and education, including: the K. Y. Lo Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada; [12] Jules Stachiewicz Medal of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering; [13] Julian Cleveland Smith Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada; [14] Thermophysics Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; [15] and Best Professor Teaching Award from the Ontario Tech University Engineering Student Society.
He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering; [16] American Society of Mechanical Engineers; [17] Engineering Institute of Canada; [18] Canadian Academy of Engineering; [19] and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. [20]
Literary Contributions
Naterer's book entitled Called by Mother Earth [21] by Breakwater Books is an intimate memoir. It recounts the personal journey of a ten-month search through rugged terrain and remote wilderness in British Columbia, for his missing son, Jordan Naterer, who disappeared during a hike in E. C. Manning Provincial Park. The book explores themes of love, determination, and humanity's connection with the natural world, through the spiritual presence of Mother Earth, referred to as "Tmxulax" by the Upper Similkameen Indian Band. The book was awarded the Gold Medal, Canada-West Best Regional Non-Fiction Book, [22] from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in 2025.
