History

Founding

Kent RO Systems was founded by Dr. Mahesh Gupta, a mechanical engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and a former engineer at Indian Oil Corporation.[3] According to reports, Gupta began experimenting with reverse osmosis technology in the late 1990s after his children fell ill from contaminated water, and found that the UV purifiers available at the time did not remove dissolved impurities.[4]

He invested ₹5 lakh from his savings to begin manufacturing and launched the brand in 1999.[4] The purifiers were initially priced at ₹20,000 and the company sold approximately 10 to 15 units per month in its early years.[4]

Growth

Kent RO established manufacturing facilities in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, which expanded to over 400,000 square feet.[5] The company reported revenue of ₹30 crore in 2005, growing to ₹250 crore by 2010.[6]

By FY 2023–24, the company reported revenue of ₹1,178 crore, up 8.7% year-on-year, with a net profit of ₹166.6 crore.[2] Water purifiers accounted for approximately 85% of revenue.[2] The company has a distribution network of over 1,500 distributors and 10,000 dealers across India.[2] It exports products to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Nepal, and Kenya.[1]

In January 2024, the company announced an entry into the United States market through a licensing agreement with Stanley Black & Decker.[1] In October 2024, co-branded BLACK+DECKER water purifiers were launched in India under this agreement.[7]

Products and technology

Kent RO manufactures water purifiers using reverse osmosis, ultraviolet, and ultrafiltration technologies. The company holds a patent for a TDS controller that retains minerals in purified water during the RO process.[8]

In 2013, the company launched the Kent Supreme model with a "Zero Water Wastage" system that stores rejected water for household use rather than discarding it.[8] The company's RO purifiers are certified by NSF International under the NSF/ANSI 58 standard for drinking water treatment units.[9]

The company also manufactures air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances, and vegetable purifiers.[1] In April 2023, Kent entered the fan market with BLDC motor fans, investing ₹150 crore in a manufacturing facility in Noida.[10]

Market position

Kent RO holds an estimated 30% to 40% market share in the Indian RO purification sector.[5] The Indian water purifier market was valued at approximately US$2.19 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$7.72 billion by 2032.[11]

Marketing

In 2005, Kent RO signed Bollywood actress Hema Malini as its brand ambassador.[12] In 2007, the company also signed Malini's daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol as ambassadors.[13] In 2019, actor Shah Rukh Khan was signed to endorse automotive security products.[14]

Corporate social responsibility

The company partnered with the Art of Living Foundation to purchase water credits supporting conservation projects.[15] The Kent Foundation also launched a menstrual hygiene education programme targeting women in rural areas in collaboration with Rotary International District 3011.[16]
