Johnson previously served as professor and chair of biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and as Chief Informatics Officer for the institution.[3] He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2010 for his contributions to biomedical informatics and health information technology.[2]

Early life and education

Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Dickinson College. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and later obtained a Master of Science in medical informatics from Stanford University.[3][1]

After completing his pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johnson served as chief resident in pediatrics and joined the faculty in both pediatrics and biomedical information sciences at Johns Hopkins.[3]

Career

Johnson began his academic career at Johns Hopkins University, where he conducted research on clinical decision support systems and evidence-based pediatric care guidelines.[3]

In 2002 he joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he served as vice chair and later chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics. During his tenure he also served as Chief Informatics Officer and led major clinical information technology initiatives, including implementation of the eStar electronic health record system.[4]

Johnson joined the University of Pennsylvania faculty in 2021 as a Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor. At Penn he holds joint appointments in the Perelman School of Medicine and the School of Engineering and Applied Science and serves as Vice President for Applied Informatics for the University of Pennsylvania Health System.[1]

He is also a professor of pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.[1]

Research

Johnson's research focuses on biomedical informatics, clinical information systems, and the use of digital technologies to improve healthcare quality and patient safety.[2] His work has examined electronic prescribing, computerized clinical documentation, decision support systems, and the application of artificial intelligence in clinical care.[3]

He has authored more than 150 scientific publications and has been principal investigator on numerous federally funded research grants.[3] In 2023 he received the NIH Director's Pioneer Award for research on using artificial intelligence to automate clinical documentation and improve physician workflows.[5]

Johnson has also contributed to science communication initiatives, including digital media projects and educational efforts designed to improve public understanding of health technology and medicine.[2]

Professional service

Johnson has held leadership roles in several professional organizations related to biomedical informatics and pediatrics. He has served in leadership positions within the American Medical Informatics Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.[3]

He has also served on federal advisory bodies, including the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils and the Board of Scientific Counselors of the United States National Library of Medicine.[6]
