Description
Lever for Change builds on the MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change competition, which was launched in 2016[4][5]. 100&Change is a global competition that awards a single grant of US$100 million every three years to one project addressing a large-scale social challenge[6][7][8]. Lever for Change adapted this funding model to facilitate connections between donors and foundations and a network of organizations that have undergone a competitive review process[9]. The organization supports donors by providing information about nonprofit organizations seeking large-scale funding and by administering competitions and grantmaking processes[10].
Open Calls
Lever for Change conducts funding competitions, which it refers to as “open calls[11].” These competitions are typically structured to award grants of more than US$20 million and solicit proposals from organizations across multiple regions[12]. Open calls are organized around specific social issues and are open to a broad range of applicants[13].
Lever for Change's open call model has been used by funders, including MacKenzie Scott and Pivotal Ventures, an organization founded by Melinda French Gates[14][15].
Proposals submitted through open calls undergo a review process that includes both participant and expert assessment[16]. Organizations that receive funding, as well as other applicants that rank highly in the review process, may be invited to join Lever for Change’s network[17][18].
Lever for Change’s Network
Finalists from Lever for Change open calls, including both grant recipients and other highly ranked applicants, are eligible to join the organization’s network[19]. As of 2023, the network included more than 500 organizations based in over 100 countries[20], and 34 percent of network members had received additional funding following their participation in the network[21].
Lever for Change offers network members access to technical assistance, opportunities for engagement with donors, and inclusion in materials shared with potential funders[22]. The organization publicly identifies these members as part of its “Bold Solutions Network”[23] and notes that participating organizations have previously undergone a competitive review process through an open call[24].
Advisory Services
Lever for Change offers advisory services to a variety of funders, philanthropic advisors, and institutions, including MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving and Pivotal Ventures (Melinda French Gates’ investment and incubation company), ICONIQ Impact, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the LEGO Foundation, as well as new and anonymous donors[25][26][27].
Leadership
Cecilia Conrad, a former economics professor and former president of Pomona College in California, is currently CEO of Lever for Change[28][14]. Previously, she led the MacArthur Foundation’s Fellows program.
Board members include Julia Stasch[29], Lynn Taliento[30], James Manyika, and Reid Hoffman.
