Shimeles achieved international recognition in 2026 when she won the 45th edition of the Rotterdam Marathon in Rotterdam, Netherlands, setting a course record of 2:18:56.[1][2] During the race, Shimeles missed two drink stations but still managed to break the record, finishing exhausted and collapsing shortly after crossing the line. She finished two seconds faster than the previous course record set in 2012 by Tiki Gelana.[3]
