History and academic origins

Pangeanic was founded by engineer and linguist Manuel Herranz. The company initially operated as a translation service provider before shifting its focus toward machine learning and NLP technologies in the 2010s.[2]

Herranz's early research into Statistical machine translation (SMT) and hybrid systems was conducted in collaboration with the PRHLT research center at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, being involved in the testing of Philipp Koehn’s CasMaCat[3][4] project, in which the Polytechnic was a partner.

In 2010, the company became one of the first language service providers to implement a commercial version of the open-source Moses platform, branded as "PangeaMT."[5]

Development of the first "PangeaMT" platform was supported by regional R&D grants and overseen by prominent computer scientists, including Francisco Casacuberta and Enrique Vidal, both recipients of the Spanish National Computer Science Award (Premio Nacional de Informática).[6][7]

Research and Development 2019–2023

Between 2019 and 2023, the company focused on migrating to Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and the development of the ECO platform, featuring automated self-training routines. This period was led by Amando Estela (then CTO), a specialist in Internet applications and AI/ML infrastructure,[8][9] and Dr. Mercedes García-Martínez, who served as Chief Scientist[10].

García-Martínez, who completed her PhD under the supervision of Marcello Federico[11] from the University of Trento and FBK[] (currently at Amazon AI), published extensive research on NMT hybridization and data selection during her tenure at Pangeanic.[12]

The company was selected for the Lanzadera accelerator program, an initiative founded by Juan Roig to support high-potential startups.[13]

2023–present

In 2023, Pangeanic was officially listed as an awarded contractor for public sector projects in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE), Spain's official gazette, for the provision of AI and language technologies.[14]

In 2025, the company achieved its second "Innovative SME" (PYME Innovadora) status by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.[15] In 2023, it was listed as an official contractor for AI technologies in the Boletín Oficial del Estado.[14]

Technology and research

Pangeanic develops proprietary artificial intelligence platforms for language processing, including the "ECO Intelligence Platform" for translation management and data processing. The company partners with academic institutions, such as the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), for research purposes.

European Union projects

Pangeanic has been a coordinator or partner in several H2020 Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and Horizon Europe projects funded by the European Union, aimed at building digital infrastructure for member states:

  • Mosaic Media: Prototypical, multilingual, and multimodal AI-enhanced platform serving as a centralized hub for European broadcasters, news creators, distributors, and consumers. It unlocks vast media archives through AI tools like transcription, translation, dubbing, subtitling, summarization, and intelligent search, enabling content reuse, cross-border collaboration, and enhanced accessibility across languages such as English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Catalan, [16] and Slovenian [17]

  • MAPA (Multilingual Anonymisation for Public Administrations): Pangeanic coordinated this project to develop an open-source toolkit for the anonymization of medical and legal data. The project was designed to help EU public administrations comply with GDPR regulations.[1][18]
  • NTEU (Neural Translation for the EU): A project focused on building neural machine translation engines for all official EU languages to facilitate cross-border communication between public bodies.[19] The datasets created during this project were later used to train "Salamandra," a language model developed by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.[20]
  • iADAATPA: Development of secure gateway technology for machine translation in governmental bodies.[21][22]

Current technology leadership

Following the transition of previous technical leads, the company's research is currently directed by Jose Miguel Herrera Maldonado (Chief Scientist) and Juan Luis García Mendoza (Head of LLM).[23]

Notable case studies

In 2024, Pangeanic's AI technology was cited as a key factor in the legal proceedings of the "Truck Cartel" (Cartel de Camiones) litigation. The company's automated processing allowed for the secure and rapid translation of massive volumes of evidentiary documentation required for the lawsuit.[24]

Commercial applications

In the private sector, the company utilizes "Deep Adaptive" machine translation, a technique where AI models are retrained on specific client data to improve accuracy. In 2024, the company deployed this technology for BYD Auto Japan to localize content for the Japanese market.[25]

Leadership

Manuel Herranz is the CEO and founder. He holds an HNC in Mechanical Engineering from Oldham College and linguistics from the University of Manchester, Translation Studies from University of Salford and Enterpreneurship course from MIT Sloan in executive education. His academic work includes research into statistical and neural translation models published in venues such as the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA).[26] He serves on the board of trustees of ValgrAI, the Valencian AI research network.[27]

Herranz is a member of the board of trustees of ValgrAI (Valencian Graduate School and Research Network of Artificial Intelligence), an organization that coordinates AI research between the Generalitat Valenciana and the five public universities in the region.[28][29]

He has been a frequent speaker at industry events such as the AI Summit New York and LocWorld,[30][31] Herranz is often interviewed regarding the impact of Generative AI on the translation industry. He has argued in industry publications that the rise of large language models has fundamentally altered the concept of human language ownership[32].
