Spanish academic research group for terminology and language technologies From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TecnoLeTTra (an acronym for Language, Terminology, and Translation Technologies) is a research group at Jaume I University (UJI) in Castelló de la Plana, Spain. Formally established in 2005, the group conducts research on applied linguistics, computational semantics, and artificial intelligence as applied to terminology and translation.[1]

History

The group originated from projects aimed at formalizing the technical language of the industrial ceramics sector, a key industry in the Province of Castellón. Early initiatives such as txt‑Ceram and the ONTODIC project developed protocols for building terminological knowledge bases.[2] The group was formally established in 2005 within the Department of Translation and Communication at Jaume I University.[1]

Research

TecnoLeTTra’s research focuses on terminological knowledge representation, ontology engineering, and translation technologies. It has developed the ONTODIC model, a framework that uses description logic to formalize conceptual relationships such as hyponymy and meronymy in a machine‑readable format.[3] More recent work has explored the interoperability of terminological data with large language models.[4]

The group’s research on translation technologies includes a 2008 study by Amparo Alcina that provided a taxonomy of translation tools, distinguishing between process automation and translator support.[5]

The group is led by Amparo Alcina, professor at Jaume I University. Its members include researchers from linguistics, mathematics, and computer science.[6]

Affiliations

TecnoLeTTra is part of ValgrAI, a joint research unit for artificial intelligence in the Valencian Community that brings together the region’s five public universities.[7] The group has collaborated with the technology company Pangeanic on research projects related to terminological knowledge bases and artificial intelligence.[8]
