Originally, this effect has been created with a noise gate using an external audio source (e.g. synthesizer[1][2], drum machine[3][4][5]) as a trigger to create a rhythmic gated pattern on the affected synthesizer[3] or sampler.

With current music technology the trance gate effect can be (and often is) created using other volume modulation tools (e.g. Kilohearts Trance Gate[6][7], IL Gross Beat, LFOTool[8], Flux Mini 2, Flux Pro and many more), step sequencer or manual volume automation[9].

A trance-gate-like rhythm can also be achieved by a certain placement of midi notes on the affected sound source. However, the result might be different compared to using a trance gate, due to the continuous triggering of a new midi note on the synthesizer/sampler instead of gating the volume.
History
Synthesizer gating techniques started to get used in music productions since the 1980s[3]. The popularity of this technique increased further during the 1990s, especially in trance music, where it became a unique sound characteristic of the genre. In classic trance, this effect was usually applied to sawthooth wave synthesizer chords or choir samples[4].
The usage of the trance gate effect expanded into various music genres and continues to be used in modern productions[5].
