From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ValgrAI (Valencian Graduate School and Research Network of Artificial Intelligence[1]) is a non-profit foundation based in Valencia, Spain. Established in 2022 by the Generalitat Valenciana.[2] The Generalitat Valenciana officially authorized the foundation's creation and funding to position the region as an AI hub.[3] ValgrAI serves as a coordinating body for artificial intelligence (AI) research and postgraduate education across the five public universities of the Valencian Community.[4]

The foundation acts as a bridge between academic research centers, such as Polytechnic University of Valencia's PRHLT, and the private sector, aiming to transform the regional productive model through AI innovation.
Governance and Partners
ValgrAI is a public-private partnership governed by a board of trustees and supported by an international scientific council.
Participating Universities
The foundation integrates the AI research capabilities of the following institutions:
Scientific Council
The foundation is notable for its Scientific Council,[5] which provides strategic guidance and includes globally recognized figures in AI research:[6]
- Ramon López de Mántaras: (President) Founder of the AI Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC).
- Virginia Dignum: Professor at Umeå University and expert in AI ethics.
- Michael Wooldridge: Professor at the University of Oxford.
- Georg Gottlob: Professor at Oxford and TU Wien.
- Hiroaki Kitano: CEO of Sony Research Inc.
- Carme Torras: Research professor at the RobotiCSIC.
Board of Trustees (Industry)
In addition to public and academic members, the board includes representatives from the private sector to drive technology transfer. In 2023, Microsoft and ValgrAI signed an agreement to foster postgraduate training and enhance employability through Microsoft's "Alumno 4.0"[7] initiative. Partnerships with public-private firms like Idrica[8] (water management technology) show ValgrAI's role in applying AI to sustainability and industrial efficiency. In 2024, the language technology and AI company Pangeanic joined the board of trustees to advance the development of Small Language Models (SLMs) and sustainable AI.[9] Other board members include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Baleària, and Hidraqua.
Funding
In early 2026, the Valencian government approved an additional €4 million[10] for ValgrAI to lead digital competency training, specifically targeting rural areas and reducing the digital divide.
Talent Recognition and Awards
The "Premios ValgrAI" (ValgrAI Awards) are widely covered as the premier event for emerging AI talent in the region. National media outlets like Cadena SER[11] and Extradigital[12] report on the winners of the best Doctoral Theses and Master's projects, specifically noting industrial applications like bone fragment detection in food processing and urban traffic reduction.
Research and Innovation Projects
Some of ValgrAI's private-public AI projects include:
- ALS Voice Recovery Project: A collaboration between ValgrAI researchers and the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) successfully used AI to clone the voice of an ALS patient, allowing him to communicate with his original timbre and identity.[13]
- ECODrive: ValgrAI has partnered with Pangeanic and the University Jaume I in AI projects such as ECODrive.[14]
Activities
ValgrAI focuses on several primary pillars:
- Education: Financing over 150 annual study grants for master's degrees in AI and data science across Valencian universities.[15]
- Research Coordination: Managing a Joint Research Unit that brings together over 50 leading scientists to work on sectors like health, transport, and language technology.[16]
- International Forums: Hosting the annual ValgrAI Scientific Council Forum (VSCF), an event that serves as a global meeting point for discussing the ethical and scientific challenges of AI.[17]
- Microcredentials and Quick Learning: Short-term, flexible training programs ("AI for Public Administration," "AI for Marketing") designed for rapid upskilling.[18]
- Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Funding: Financing research contracts for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, with a specific focus on Industrial Doctorates to encourage technology transfer.
