Background: Welwitchia University (WU)
Welwitchia University is a private institution of higher learning in Namibia. It was formerly known as the Welwitchia Health Training Centre and specializes in health, social, and management sciences.[1].The institution is known for its slogan, “Where Everyone Is an Achiever.” The National Council for Higher Education granted the Welwitchia Health Training Centre full university status[2].
Welwitchia University currently operates seven campuses across Namibia, located in Walvis Bay, Kombat, Mururani, Nkurenkuru, Katima Mulilo, Outapi, and Windhoek. The Windhoek Campus was the first to be established and serves as the main campus of the University[3]. The institution offers professional education in health, social, and management sciences to both Namibian and international students [4]. According to the Council Chairperson, Dr. Pendukeni, the University plans to expand into additional programs such as social, technical, and management disciplines, to strengthen its role within Namibia’s higher education sector [5]
The University was founded in September 2013 [6] by Scholastika Ndatinda Iipinge and Monika Pendukeni, both of whom are from the Omusati Region in northern Namibia [7].
Faculties
Welwitchia University comprises of several faculties and schools, with a strong focus on health sciences, law, and commerce. These include the School of Nursing, the School of Allied and Public Health, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Law and Commerce, the School of Social Work, and the School of Education. In addition, the University operates a Centre for Distance and E-Learning [8].
Programmes
Welwitchia University offers a wide range of academic and professional programmes across various disciplines. These include certificates, diplomas, undergraduates, and postgraduate qualifications aligned with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The programmes offered include:
