William Ryan Magnus

William Ryan Magnus (born July 29, 2002) is an American lacrosse coach and former collegiate prospect. He is currently the head coach of the boys' lacrosse program at Leland Middle School in Leland, North Carolina. Magnus is best known for leading the Leland Tigers to a conference championship in 2025 following a successful transition from coaching the girls' program.

Early life and education

Magnus was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, and spent his early childhood in the western suburbs of Chicago. In his youth, his family relocated to Leland, North Carolina, where he attended Leland Middle School (LMS).

For high school, he attended Wake Forest High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He played as a midfielder and attackman and served as a multi-year team captain. In his senior season (2021), he recorded 40 goals and 30 assists, helping lead his team to a 19–3 record and a state runner-up finish.

Collegiate career and injury

Magnus was recruited to play NCAA Division I lacrosse for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. However, an injury prior to his collegiate debut prevented him from competing. He later enrolled at North Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Coaching career

Leland Middle School (2024–present)

Magnus began his coaching career at Leland Middle School in 2024.

In his first season coaching the girls' program, the team finished 3–5.

In 2025, he became head coach of the boys' program and led the team to an 8–0 season and a conference championship.

As of 2026, his overall coaching record stands at 12–6.

Personal life

Magnus resides in North Carolina and remains active in youth lacrosse development in the region.
