Lockerbie Academy is a mainstream non-denominational secondary school in Lockerbie, Scotland. The current head teacher of Lockerbie Academy is Brian Asher and the Acting Headteacher is Kerry Currie. The school roll is around 700 as of 2026.[1]

History

Lockerbie Old School in 2008

The Original Lockerbie Academy was built in 1875 and is known as Lockerbie Old School [2]. In 1988 during the Lockerbie Bombing The Old School was used as a shelter for families and other residents[3].

The other Academy was built in 1903 and after the Lockerbie Bombing The School made a scholarship program with Syracuse University as 38 of their students were on the Flight.

The other Academy was then demolished allegedly because of Asbestos and then the site was bought by Cunninghame Housing Association turning the site into a residential area which was then named Academy Place in memory of the other Academy[4].

The Present Lockerbie Academy officially opened its doors in 2010 after years of construction and is still being used today[5]

The school won a Nurture Award in 2026 from Nurture UK. [6]

Syracuse Scholarship

Syracuse University and Lockerbie academy have a scholarship program due to Syracuse University having 35 students on board Pan Am 103 when it exploded over Lockerbie. To be a Lockerbie Scholar you have to be a high achieving pupil at the academy.[7].

The Scholarship has been replaced with a 1 week immersion trip where Lockerbie Academy Pupils can take part in a rose laying ceremony in remembrance of the 270 lives taken on Pan Am 103.[8]

Notable Pupils

Nick De Luca: Scottish former professional rugby union player who played as a centre. He was a Pupil at the old lockerbie Academy before it was demolished in 2011.[9]

David Mundell: Scottish Conservative Party politician and solicitor who has served as Member of Parliament for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale since 2005. He was also a Pupil at the old Lockerbie Academy before it was demolished.[10]

David Murdoch: Retired Scottish curler. He was also a Pupil at the old Lockerbie Academy before it was demolished. [11]
