Merrill was drafted in the second round of the 1978 NFL draft by the New York Jets with the 31st overall pick. He split that season between the Jets and the Chicago Bears.[1] After a season away from the NFL, he would spend the 1981 NFL season with the Denver Broncos before splitting the following year between the Broncos and the Green Bay Packers. He spent the next season with the Buffalo Bills before once again splitting the next seasons, this time between the Bills and the Los Angeles Raiders.
