Geography

Miryalaguda is located at 16.8667°N 79.5833°E / 16.8667; 79.5833.[6] It has an average elevation of 105 metres (344 ft).

History and Archaeology

Miryalaguda and its surrounding revenue division possess a rich historical legacy, with evidence of continuous human habitation from the prehistoric era through various medieval dynasties.

Telugu Cholas, Kakatiyas, Reddy Kings, Nizam Dynasties ruled this region.

Prehistoric and Neolithic Era

Recent archaeological surveys have identified the Miryalaguda region as a significant hub for early human activity:

  • Neolithic Rock Art: In May 2025, 6,000-year-old rock "bruisings" (etchings) were discovered on a hillock at Ramalingalagudem, near Miryalaguda. These depictions include bulls, stags, dogs, and a rare scene of a prehistoric man in combat with a tiger. The presence of specialized "sharpening grooves" on boulders indicates the site served as a prehistoric manufacturing center for stone axes.[7]
Neolithic rock art style similar to the 6000 BCE bruisings found in the Miryalaguda-Nalgonda region.
  • Megalithic Burial Sites: The Miryalaguda belt contains Iron Age monuments dating between 2000 BCE and 1000 BCE. Notable findings include a unique "capstone" dolmen (a massive unshaped boulder tomb) and vertical menhirs at Gudipalli, reflecting sophisticated prehistoric engineering skills.[8]
  • The Buddhavanam Buddhist Heritage Theme Park, situated at vijayapuri nagarjuna sagr, is a major international Buddhist site that falls within the administrative and geographical proximity of the Miryalaguda division. This heritage site preserves 3rd-century Ikshvaku dynasty relics and historical stupas, marking the region's importance in ancient Buddhist history.[9][10]

Ancient and Medieval Kingdoms

The region has been ruled by several prominent dynasties that shaped its cultural landscape:

  • Early Dynasties: Miryalaguda was part of the broader Nalgonda region controlled by the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka, followed by the Satavahanas (230 BC – 218 BC), who established early trade contacts with the Roman Empire.[11]
  • Badami Chalukya Influence: In 2024, two 1,300-year-old temples from the Badami Chalukyan era were unearthed at Mudimanikyam village, within the Miryalaguda division. An 8th-century "label inscription" found here contains the word "Gandaloranru" (meaning 'hero' or 'warrior' in Old Kannada), suggesting a military or heroic title linked to the dynasty.[12]
  • Reddy and Kakatiya Dynasties: The 12th-century Vadapally Agastheshwara Temple, located at the confluence of the Krishna and Muchukunda rivers near Miryalaguda, was constructed by the Reddy Kings. The region also saw significant fortification and temple construction during the Kakatiya period. The lakshmi narasimha swamy temple located here is the first pancha kshethram.[13]
  • Land Grants and Patronage: During the rule of the Reddy and Kakatiya dynasties, the Miryalaguda division served as a strategic agricultural and religious hub. The Reddy kings are noted for providing extensive land grants to the temples in the Miryalaguda belt, ensuring the preservation of the region's cultural and architectural heritage through the centuries.[14]

  • Modern Era: Following the fall of the Kakatiyas, the area passed through the control of the Bahmani Sultanate, the Qutb Shahi dynasty, and eventually the Asaf Jahi dynasty until the integration of Hyderabad State into the Indian Union.[11]from 1883, appearing in the "Historical and Descriptive Sketch of His Highness the Nizam's Dominions" by Bimore C. Willmott and Syed Husain Bilgrami. This early map provides a detailed view of the region's historical layout.[15]

The historical maps and data from 1883 and 1909 are essential for identifying and delivering a clear picture of Miryalaguda's development as part of the Nizam's Dominions.

Records of the settlement under the variant name Mirialguda date back to the early 18th century following the establishment of the Asaf Jahi dynasty in 1724. During this period, the city's existence as a revenue-generating village within the Nalgonda Sarkar was formally documented in the Daftar-i-Mal (Land Revenue Office) archives. These primary records, consisting of Persian and Urdu sanads (land grants) and ahkams (administrative orders) from the 1720s onwards, specifically identify Mirialguda as a functional administrative hub. Mirialguda was the standardized official spelling used in these 18th-century records before it evolved into the modern name Miryalaguda.[17][18]

The earliest well documented verifiable archival reference to the settlement appears in an 1812 file maintained by the American Baptist Historical Society, titled South India: Nalgonda – Miryalaguda Village Plot. This confirms that the town existed and was recognized by the name Miryalaguda or Mirialguda in the early 1800's. Shows the City has more than 200 years of well documented evidences.[19]
