History
SmarterPhone was founded in 2023 by Tad Low, a New York City–based television producer and parent. The organization was established in response to concerns about the impact of early smartphone adoption and social media use on children's mental health and development. SmarterPhone is aligned with initiatives associated with The Anxious Generation author Jonathan Haidt and promotes coordinated approaches among parents and schools to establish shared technology boundaries.[2]
The organization initially focused on advocacy within the founder's children's schools, encouraging policies that delayed smartphone access among elementary and middle school students. SmarterPhone later expanded its activities to additional schools and parent communities in the New York City metropolitan area. Early outreach efforts included in-person events featuring authors, psychologists, and other experts discussing adolescent development, technology use, and mental health.[3]
Advocacy and programs
SmarterPhone's activities center on parent education, school policy engagement, and promotion of alternatives to smartphones for children.
Digital pledge
SmarterPhone promotes a digital pledge intended to align families around shared expectations for children's technology use. The pledge includes principles such as avoiding phones of any kind before sixth grade and postponing smartphone use until high school. The organization produces customized newsletters and pledge materials tailored to individual school communities.[3]
Parent education
The organization organizes community gatherings that bring together mental health professionals, technology industry experts, and local advocates. These events aim to inform parents about social media pressures facing children and the potential effects on mental health, educational outcomes, and social development.
School policy engagement
SmarterPhone engages with school administrators, parent association leaders, and wellness staff to encourage changes in school technology policies. In one private middle school, the organization supported the introduction of lockable phone storage pouches beginning in middle school, followed by a transition to a phone-free, K–12 policy during the school day.[4]
Alternative devices
The organization partners with manufacturers of limited-function mobile phones to provide school-specific discounts on devices designed to restrict access to social media platforms.
Reception
SmarterPhone's advocacy has received mixed responses from parents. Some have expressed criticism of the organization's early messaging, while others have supported its goals and community-based approach. According to its founder, SmarterPhone has since emphasized more inclusive dialogue and flexibility to accommodate differing family needs, focusing on building majority support within school communities rather than universal participation.[3]
