Expand lead a bit?
Thanks Aviationwikiflight (talk · contribs) for expanding this article. Do you think you could expand the lead a little bit? I can't review the GAN since I originally wrote it, but I'm glad someone else got around to working on it! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:52, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi @Hurricanehink, thanks! Has the lead been expanded enough now? Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:43, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
- Much better! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:38, 10 November 2025 (UTC)

- The lede section seems a bit short, but that's alright.
- The meterological history too seems a bit short, not a GA problem though and it covers the main points.
On 26 April, a tropical low formed in the Banda Sea in the waters of eastern Indonesia.
- highlighted part is redundant due to the wikilink to Banda Sea (and arguably the track map).- Removed. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
In Palu'e, 1,300 houses
- this has a curly quote which is (partly) why it's a red link, change to Palue Island or Palu'e.
Done. Changed to Palue Island.
Kompas had previously written that
- is the quote following this entirely needed? Seems like it could be shortened.- Removed the quote as the previous sentence covers it. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
Indonesia's Minister of Information stated to reporters after a cabinet meeting:
- same here, if it's a reliable source you could paraphrase it instead of quoting, or state as fact if you're sure.- Removed the mention as it doesn't add much now that I think of it. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
A government relief team accompanied by the Red Cross was sent to Flores, described as "battered".
- clarify, was the relief team or Flores battered?- To clarify, Flores was battered, not the relief team. I removed the statement as I realize that the damage descriptions should be enough to convey the extent of the damage. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
The Kompas report from June 1973 also noted
- "also" is unneeded.
Done. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
In addition, the cyclone
- ditto, I feel like these somewhat disrupt the flow and are generally not recommended.
Done. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 15:09, 7 February 2026 (UTC)
Hi @HurricaneZeta. Are there any more issues or comments that you want to raise? Aviationwikiflight (talk) 07:53, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
- No, that's all. I need to a spotcheck which I will post after this one. All three images are in the public domain, so no issues there, and the article is broad enough for GA with no copyvio and a centered focus. HurricaneZetaC 23:59, 15 February 2026 (UTC)

- ... that news of the Southern Hemisphere's deadliest cyclone (pictured) took a month to reach authorities?
- Source:
- (Goldberg & Rankey 2023)
for the "deadliest" part; (Padgett 2000) and others for the time it took for information to reach authorities.
- (Goldberg & Rankey 2023)
- Reviewed:
- Comment: I'm open to other hooks and/or modifications to the proposed hook, but this to me is the one that stands out.
Aviationwikiflight (talk) 07:36, 22 February 2026 (UTC).
I'm not sure if it really matters, but I think you meant to say Padgett 2002 instead of "Padgett 2000" on this nomination page. I did verify that the news took about a month to arrive using Padgett. However, for the deadliest cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere claim, I think you should add the page number for that source, especially given that it is a 438-page book and isn't fully open access. I did verify that claim looking at other sources via a quick Google search, so you could look elsewhere if you have problems with accessing that source. Otherwise, I find that hook interesting. The article also meets the other criteria such as reliable sources, character count, timing of nomination, being free of copyvio violations, etc. Lastly, the nominator is not required to complete any QPQs.--12george1 (talk) 05:55, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for reviewing this. Regarding the Padgett citation, sorry about the date mess-up (and thanks for correcting it). I was a bit in a rush to complete the nomination. Regarding (Goldberg & Rankey 2023), I accessed it through Google Books which doesn't give page numbers. If not, (Warren 2019), Weather Underground, and Kompas TV also verify the claim. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 07:27, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
I searched "1973" here and one of the results said "... 1973, an unnamed cyclone formed in the Banda Sea and became the Southern Hemisphere's deadliest cyclone. Although it was only a Category 3 storm, an estimated 1,500 fishermen were killed by the cyclone on Palu'e Island, news that..." Now that I have verified that claim, I am going to support this nomination--12george1 (talk) 16:36, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- Rereading the source, I've just realized that (Goldberg & Rankey 2023) verifies the hook completely without needing (Padgett 2000). Here's the full passage: "
For example, in 1973, an unnamed cyclone formed in the Banda Sea and became the Southern Hemisphere's deadliest cyclone. Although it was only a Category 3 storm, an estimated 1,500 fishermen were killed by the cyclone on Palu'e Island alone, news that did not reach the capital Jakarta for a month.
" Thanks again. Aviationwikiflight (talk) 18:26, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
