Guideline for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples terminology Be conscious of the unique, diverse and distinct identities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and understand the use of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is as a collective name. Collective names used to describe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples:
Although "Indigenous Australians" is in common use, and is used to encompass both Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people, many First Nations Australians feel the term diminishes their identity and should be avoided; however, where the word "Indigenous" forms part of an acronym to describe entities, organisations, or government departments the use is acceptable. When used, the words Indigenous, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, First Nations, First Peoples, and First Australians are capitalised. Note: Never use the collective name "Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander" peoples as it misrepresents the identity of Torres Strait Islander peoples as not being the original inhabitants of islands in the Torres Strait. Self-identifying terms:
This is not an exhaustive list Language that can be discriminatory or offensive and should be avoided:
This is not an exhaustive list Note: It is acceptable to use abbreviations in your communications when they form part of an acronym, a web address or an organisation (e.g. AIATSIS, NAIDOC, www.atsi.org.au). Using an acronym or abbreviation to describe a race of people can be offensive and discriminatory. For further information, please refer to: Terminology can change over time and, where possible, it is best practice to find out what the preferred term is from the respective Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander group or individual you are referring to. Dark green on black is hard to read
At File:Australia_states_and_territories_labelled.svg, I find the dark green on black text to be hard to read unless I zoom in. It's an SVG file, so should be simple to change the dark green to something else, or to change the text color to white. Thoughts? –Novem Linguae (talk) 11:28, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
- Colour is easy enough to change, probably shouldn't change the text to white given the wider background. Is a globe really the best way to display states and territories? CMD (talk) 11:48, 10 December 2025 (UTC)
- It's simple; White text on dark green, black text everywhere else. ~2026-12115-4 (talk) 20:06, 6 January 2026 (UTC)

Population clock and population estimate
Hello all
The population estimate for Australia in the info box appears to have been some automated link. However, it was not showing the correct estimate. The correct estimate as of today is 27,840,781 I have typed this into the info box. However, it will need to be changed daily. If someone wished to automate this process (I don't have the expertise to do so) they will need to be sure that it gives the correct result according to the cited and linked source.
Happy to discuss Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 02:50, 11 January 2026 (UTC)

Change:
Australia also claims about 42% of Antarctica as the Australian Antarctic Territory, but this claim is only recognised by four other countries.[16]
To:
Australia also claims about 42% of Antarctica as the Australian Antarctic Territory, and no party has disputed Australia's claim.[16]
Reason for the change:
The change is supported by the Reference [16] 13-page paper by Scott 2021, p. 491, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia#CITEREFScott2021, where it states that recognition or non-recognition is irrelevant in current law and past rulings (paraphrased). ~2026-12115-4 (talk) 22:49, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
- The current wording is factually correct and there is no need to change it. The paper you cite represents the argument of one scholar and other views exist. As the article you cite states, several states including the US expressly do not recognise Australia's claim. The legal implications of this can be discussed in the relevant articles on Antarctica and the Antarctic Treaty System. Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 23:22, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
