Article review

It has been a while since this article has been reviewed, so I took another look and saw lots of uncited statements, including entire paragraphs. Should this article go to WP:GAR? Z1720 (talk) 02:48, 5 May 2025 (UTC)

List of capitals bordering another state

There is a list of national capitals bordering another state. According to this list, Singapore is situated similarly to Bratislava in that it's on two international borders. It's the only other capital that falls in this category. Surfingslovak (talk) 02:19, 27 September 2025 (UTC)

I changed the info. Dasomm (talk) 18:40, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
I now understand what was intended. When I removed the sentence about bordering two sovereign states in the lede, I thought that the sentence was saying that Bratislava is on the border of Austria and Slovakia and was unique in being a national capital on the border of two countries. I was not aware that Bratislava also borders Hungary. Obviously a capital that is situated on the border of two sovereign states is not as unique as being on the border of three. Now that I've read the new revision I see my error. I do think the wording could be improved to make it a little more clear that Bratislava is on the border of three countries, not two; but I'm not sure how. Bratislava Metropolitan Region

Dear Editors,

I’d like to open a discussion regarding the population figures in the lead section. The current edit uses the population of the Bratislavský kraj (from 2023), which is an administrative region. However, the metropolitan region is distinct: it reflects the functional urban area defined by commuting, economic integration, and urban ties. The functional metropolitan region provides a more accurate context, as it mirrors the city’s real socio-economic influence beyond administrative borders.

The source I cited, a study by the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Šveda, 2025, Slovenský národopis), defines the wider Bratislava metropolitan region. This methodology used globally relies on commuting patterns to delineate the region but counts residents within those boundaries. Including a metropolitan population (around 1.3 million) gives readers a fuller picture similar to other capital cities on Wikipedia showing both the city proper and its broader influence.

I believe this approach improves the article’s accuracy and aligns with standard urban geography practices. Let’s discuss further! Thetransportgeek (talk) 09:15, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

To add some additional context to my earlier comment, mentioning the metropolitan population in the lead would also align the article with how many other major cities and capitals are presented on Wikipedia. In several cases the lead includes both the population of the administrative city and the wider metropolitan area when reliable sources define such a region. This helps readers understand the difference between the city proper and the broader urban system that functions around it.
For example, the article on Košice already mentions its wider urban agglomeration in the lead, and many other European capitals such as Prague, Budapest, and Vienna, as well as cities like Brno, similarly provide metropolitan context. Including such information improves comparability and consistency between city articles.
The metropolitan region referenced in the cited study does not represent the number of daily commuters to Bratislava. Rather, it refers to a functional metropolitan region defined through commuting patterns, economic integration, and urban linkages. This is a widely used concept in urban geography: commuting data are used to determine which surrounding municipalities are strongly connected to the city, and the population figure then reflects the residents living within that wider metropolitan area.
The figure referenced in my edit is derived from peer‑reviewed academic research conducted by the Slovak Academy of Sciences (Šveda, 2025, Slovenský národopis), which specifically analyzes the functional Bratislava metropolitan region using established methodologies in metropolitan and regional studies. The study delineates the metropolitan area through detailed analysis of commuting flows, economic integration, and spatial interaction between Bratislava and surrounding municipalities, which are the standard criteria used internationally to define functional urban regions. This methodological framework is consistent with those employed by other major international statistical and research institutions such as the OECD and Eurostat, as well as in a large body of comparative urban research. As such, the population figure reflects a rigorously defined functional metropolitan region rather than an arbitrary estimate, and it represents the most academically grounded and methodologically robust assessment currently available for Bratislava’s metropolitan population.
For these reasons, I believe that briefly mentioning the metropolitan population in the lead clearly distinguished from the administrative city population would provide useful context for readers and remain consistent with both academic sources and the structure of comparable city articles on wikipedia.
Also thank you so much for reading this as well as the sources cited above! @Dasomm Thetransportgeek (talk) 23:02, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
Hey! Thanks for the detailed explanation and for sharing that SAV study, it’s a great source. I think we can definitely have both figures in the article. To keep things clear for everyone, I’ve updated the Infobox to show both the official Bratislava Region (administrative) and the wider Metropolitan Area (functional). I’ve also added a note clarifying that this metropolitan region is defined as the combined territory of the Bratislava and Trnava self-governing regions, based on the study's methodology. This way, we follow the official government data while also giving readers the fuller picture of the city’s actual reach that you mentioned. It’s a win-win and stays consistent with how other capitals like Prague or Vienna are handled on Wikipedia. Dasomm (talk) 06:32, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your thoughtful updates! I really appreciate how you’ve included both the official region and the wider metropolitan area in the infobox + the additional note explaining the context. To keep it consistent, would you be open to adding the same metropolitan figure and note into the intro section as well? That way, readers get a clear picture of Bratislava’s actual reach right from the start, just like other cities do and also keeps the intro/lead section of the article as consistent as possible. Let me know what you think! Thetransportgeek (talk) 14:09, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
No problem, I’m glad we reached a consensus :) Dasomm (talk) 20:18, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
