Talk:Devilish Presley

A few cites were recently added to the article, however they almost all have issues. Some existing ones also do. To itemise them;

  • This cite is used in a few places. It says they have toured for ten years, not eleven as claimed in the article. And five albums, not six. Otherwise, it contains little about what is mentioned in the first sentence prior to it. Not the genre, the year formed, number of albums, record label, or the nature of their fans. It confirms a small number of gigs in Europe. However, chief problem is it is a user generated website. That means it was likely written and updated by the band itself, and therefore cannot be considered a neutral or reliable source.
  • Not sure what this BBC cite is being used to verify. It's just a gig review that doesn't contain anything mentioned on the article.
  • The youtube video was not published by any reputable source, and does little but confirm someone recorded them at a gig sometime. It verges on trivia. The content is in Slovakian, so no-one can tell what is said. Technically it's a copyright violation.
  • This source is a forum post. Forum posts are never acceptable sources.
  • This is a post from a Usenet newsgroup archive by an unknown person. Usenet Newsgroup posts are rarely acceptable sources.
  • The crowdfunder cite certainly confirms the amount raised. It doesn't say anything about how quickly, who by, or anything about the nature of it.
  • This gig review confirms a gig happened. It doesn't say it was a sell out.

I am a member of the band and wish to ensure the accuracy of this article and it’s overall layout per WP:COI I have revised the entry to be strictly factually based on the provided sources. I've removed descriptive language to avoid 'original research' concerns.
I request an entirely new layout in four parts ie: Beginning, two middle sections, and an end: I request a new heading for Section One ‘History and Reception’
I would request that much of the FIRST section that has been removed and altered due to its poor link citations and maintenance be restored and revised. Here are 14 links to reliable sources that confirms the accuracy of this section. Since these are independent secondary sources, this information meets the WP:V (Verifiability) standard and should not be removed as 'unsourced'."
(Devilish Presley were an English gothabilly band from London, England.)
History and Reception
A gothabilly, punk band that formed in East London in 2002, they released six albums on their own label November Tenth Records and toured constantly for thirteen years building a loyal following from the goth, punk and psychobilly scenes in the UK and Europe. (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6) In 2004-2005 Devilish Presley were the house band at the London club Dead and Buried, run by DJ Cavey Nik a period that cemented their reputation within the subculture.(7) Music journalist Natasha Scharf, in her book Worldwide Gothic, identifies the band as ‘garage punk’ but still a part of the genre's 21st-century resurgence, and noting the importance of Dead and Buried.(8) The band's Pity For Monsters Promotions were partly responsible for bringing many US and European deathrock bands to the UK for the first time. On Saturday October 23rd the band’s collaboration with DJ Cavey Nik resulted in an all-day festival of horror punk and deathrock, called ‘Bring Out Your Dead’. A review by Uncle Nemesis points out how hard Deviish Presley worked at this time playing a 20 date tour taking them from “Belgium to Brixton, Dublin to Dudley and Germany twice”. (9) At this time the band were still promoting their second album ‘Disgraceland’ the first to be produced by Kevin Poree. (10) (11) According to BBC Nottingham in 2005 they were “at the cutting edge of the (Deathrock/goth) scene”, and although they were perhaps not “the gothic White Stripes…it was an understandable comparison”. The review also highlights Johnny’s “great” guitar playing. (12) On Saturday 23rd April 2005 the band performed at the Whitby Goth Weekend for the first time. (13) On 31 October 2005 in Dublin they were listed as ‘Gig of the Day’ in the Dublin Evening Herald when they performed at Tower Records and in the evening at Whelan's (music venue). (14)

I also request a New Heading for Section Two ‘Memphisto - Publishing Deal and Widening Appeal’
Memphisto - Publishing Deal and Widening Appeal
2005 saw the release of the critically acclaimed (15) Memphisto album produced by Kevin Poree, (16) which had “the biggest, baddest guitar sound, this side of Never Mind The Bollocks (Sex Pistols). Another review summed up the album “If you can imagine Eddie Cochrane jamming with the Stooges, you can begin to touch the feeling of this record. (17)(18) This helped the band widen their appeal, playing at many punk and psychobilly gigs. Among bands they supported were The Damned, and The Meteors. (19) They were signed to the Wipe Out Music publishing company by John Esplen, and the company still handle the band’s back-catalogue today. (20) The single Hammer Horror Glamour (from the Memphisto album) was featured on several cover-mount CDs including Big Cheese magazine (UK) and Zillo (Germany) and Sonic Seducer (Germany). (21) In June 2006 the band supported The Misfits at Leeds University where they were criticised for not having a drummer. (22) At this time the band were often featured on Punky Radio, who put the band on at the Town Mill in Mansfield for their Block Party 7 on 27th December 2006. (22)
Halloween Queen the follow-up single to Hammer Horror Glamour was made available on iTunes in March 2007 and the band played a 25 date Halloween Queen UK tour - the only one using a live drummer - Ragborn Rosy and played in Strasbourg for the second time. (23) (24) (25) In 2007 they played the London Barfly, where one journalist noted how the band had already ‘left the deathrock scene and no longer just played at goth clubs to a “limited audience” as they began to play at more conventional venues. (26)(27)(28) More European dates in Germany and Poland followed including a return to Greifswalds Black Box club. (29) These were followed by another UK tour to promote Voodoo Goddess the first single taken from the forthcoming Flesh Ride (2008, their fourth album).
In May 2008 Johnny was chosen as back-up guitar player by Meteors frontman P.Paul Fenech (The Meteors) and toured Europe with him in 2008), when he undertook a European solo tour in Germany starting at the Psychomani Rumble 2 in Potsdam, Milan Italy, and London at Dingwalls. (30) In August the band announced their new album "Flesh Ride" would be released on 31 October. In December 2008 the band were the UK tour support for The Damned on 19 dates around the country including the Islington Academy. (31) (32) (33) The band toured the UK again in March and April 2009 to promote their Flesh Ride album, although their fourth album which wasn’t produced by Kevin Poree, hadn’t been as well recived by critics as Memphisto. (34) At one of these dates in Birmingham on 3 April – a live DVD was filmed. Entitled Live Voodoo it became the band's debut DVD when it was released on 15 June. The band confirmed in early 2010 that Jacqui Vixen had been forced to quit playing the bass due to an RSI Repetitive strain injury she had been suffering from for some time. The problem began after a fall whilst on tour in Germany in 2008 and her style of playing (all down strokes) had aggravated the condition. Prior to the recording of the fifth album The Dark Triad, Vixen began taking vocal coaching under the tutelage of Stevie Vann and took over the role of lead vocalist. The band took a break from touring in 2010 and only played a few festivals including The Rock & Blues Custom Show in Derbyshire and the Gathering Dust festival in Switzerland, (35) (36) (37)

I also request a New Heading for Section Three ‘The Dark Triad & Winding Down’
The Dark Triad & Winding Down
In January 2011, after two years of recording sessions, the band finished mixing their fifth album at Berry Street Studio with Kevin Poree producing. (38)(39) A UK Tour began in January and on Monday 7 February the band released a direct to download single "The Beast Must Die" taken from their forthcoming album. The Dark Triad was released on CD & all major digital outlets on 9 May 2011, Soundsphere Magazine noted ”…with their fifth album the Devilish ones might have just released their best work so far”. (40) As with all Devilish Presley’s albums the artwork was created by Danny Matulic, who also designed their logo. The album launch took place in Colchester at The Twist on Sat May 7th. (41) On 31 October 2011 the band released I Created A Monster which had been premiered as an exclusive track on ‘Loudest of 2010’ a covermount CD Free with issue 129 of Big Cheese Magazine.
Critical reception of The Dark Triad highlighted its ‘new sound’, production quality and diverse influences. (42)(43) SoundSphere Magazine compared the album's energy to that of The Ramones, while noting "ambient, goth-like" elements that aligned the band with genre icons like The Sisters of Mercy. Similarly, WithGuitars observed that the album's two-year production cycle resulted in a "glam stomping feel" that distinguished it from the band's earlier, more stripped-back releases. The Dark Triad (2011), marked a stylistic evolution for the group. Vive Le Rock noted the addition of vocalist Jacqui Vixen as a "definite blessing," praising the balance between "ethereal melody and raw, guttural bite" against a backdrop of "horrorbilly overtones." With Guitars Music Magazine called it ”An extremely accomplished and confident album”.(44) After the UK tour the band went to Europe for what turned out to be their final European dates. On Friday 3rd June 2011, they played Winterthur Switzerland at GGS31, and on June 4th they returned to Strasbourg at the Molodoi again. At the end of the year long Dark Triad Tour, the band returned to the Whitby Goth Weekend on Friday 4th November 2011 where ”…Their energy and sheer attitude always make for a great show”. (45)

In early 2012 they undertook a short UK tour and played the final gig in Corby on Sat Apr 21 2012 supporting Vice Squad. In July 2012 Vixen and Navarro left east-London and took a break, during which time Johnny Navarro wrote a novel Kill Devil Delta a fictionalised account of his time in the band, thinly disguised and an act called Crowstone.(48) The book came with a CD of music by Crowstone.

I also suggest a New Heading for Section Four ’The Electric Ballroom and Final Split’
The Electric Ballroom and Final Split
In November 2014, Devilish Presley's sixth studio album, The Electric Ballroom, was financed via a crowdfunding campaign that raised £2,080.
(49) The album was produced by Kevin Poree (50) and Zac Dorne at Goldmaster Allstars and released in May 2015. One reviewer noted “Johnny takes a vocal backseat on this album, allowing Jacqui Vixen to put her unique stamp on every song. Part female Lemmy/part Joan Jett on steroids, she holds nothing back”. (51) The band returned to the live stage for a farewell tour and to promote The Electric Ballroom album and Johnny's novel Kill Devil Delta. The London show on 10 October at London's Pipeline Club featured DJ Cavey Nik on the decks. Here the band thanked their devoted followers, who were known as ‘The Devil’s Dandy Dogs’, one review said ”...this is a cult band who has been able to build a following of faithful supporters through hard work and generosity towards their fans.” (52) Louder than War finished by saying “Devilish Presley have left the building.” The final release on their November Tenth Records label was a Limited Edition 4GB Memory Stick containing all six of their albums, plus photos, videos, lyrics, rarities and memorabilia. The Devil’s Highway finally ran out of road on November 21 2015 at the Globe in Newcastle. (53)
