Diagram

The diagram needs reworking, there are closed stations and branches missing, as is the turning triangle at Bowes Park. See Hertford East Branch Line. Mjroots (talk) 14:37, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

One Obvious Missing (Closed) Station

The obvious omission is of Stapleford station - between Hertford North and Watton-at-Stone. It was a pre-Beeching closure - but unfortunately I have been unable to find the book I need, in order to check on its date of closure. (And, unusually, for such a matter - sites such as Subterrananea Brittanica are no help) - so I will attempt to continue looking! Hair Commodore (talk) 12:21, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

According to: http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/List-of-closed-railway-stations-in-Britain/, Stapleford (GNR) station closed in 1939. Hair Commodore (talk) 12:47, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Another station which needs attention drawn to it is Enfield_Chase insofar as it used to be the terminus of the line, before it was extended in the 1920s - and the old station was on a site west of the present one! (The article on that station needs this information added too. 12:36, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Missing tunnels!

There are two tunnels on the Hertford Loop Line - both deserve to be mentioned, and placed on the map/diagram. They are:

 Ponsbourne Tunnel between Cuffley andBayford;

and

(Great) Mole Wood Tunnel between Hertford_North and the now-closed Stapleford. Hair Commodore (talk) 14:15, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Pardon me - Ponsbourne Tunnel is already on the diagram! So mea culpa, mea maxima culpa ... Hair Commodore (talk) 11:51, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Names of Junctions

Also missing ta present are the names of the junctions with the ECML at both souther and northern ends. These are:

Hertford North junction - just north of Alexandra_Palace_railway_station
and Langley junction - just south of Stevenage_railway_station.

These should be added! Hair Commodore (talk) 11:42, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Rolling Stock

Just wondering if the Rolling Stock section in the infobox should only display stock used to run services on the line, or stock that actually uses the line without stopping, e.g. 365's? Sgreen93 (talk) 04:41, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Just the former I suggest, as when the ECML goes wrong everybody uses the loop as a diversionary. Fu Manchuchu (talk) 11:23, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Renaming the article

This line is officially called the Hertford Line (see references in article to Network Rail & Quail Maps). It's also commonly known as the Hertford Loop. But it is not and never has been the Hertford Loop Line. (Contrast this with the correctly titled Catford Loop Line - because its official name really is the Catford Loop). I propose renaming this page "The Hertford Line" - since that is its proper name. Fu Manchuchu (talk) 14:01, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

I've just checked Quail: on maps 14 and 24, it uses "Up Hertford" and "Down Hertford" next to the lines and "Hertford Loop" in the map heading; and the engineer's line reference HDB denotes Hertford North Loop. Either way, please don't use the definite article: we should use either Hertford Loop or Hertford Line, not The Hertford Line. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:28, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Oppose for both proposed names. "Hertford Line" would create confusion with Hertford East Branch Line and "Hertford Loop" is also the name of a cycleroute. "Hertford Loop Line" is the title of the main book covering this line. Lamberhurst (talk) 17:37, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Hertford Loop lineHertford loop lineHertford loop line – The Hertford loop is not a specific thing; the name 'loop' is attached to line (because the line is a loop) rather than to the word Herford. Cf.: Catford loop line, Kingston loop line, and the fact the category is called Railway loop lines JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 13:34, 31 August 2025 (UTC)  Relisting. TarnishedPathtalk 05:40, 8 September 2025 (UTC)

  • Oppose - various literature use Hertford Loop in the capitalised form and it has always been known locally as the Hertford Loop. Difficultly north (talk) Time, department skies 19:30, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
(Obviously this is OR but) I can confirm that it is not known as the 'Hertford Loop'; normally people call it the Hertford line or the Hertford North line. It is called the Hertford loop line because it is a loop line that goes through Hertford, not a line called the "Hertford Loop", a concept that doesn't exist. Where is the "Hertford Loop" a thing outside railways like the Hope Valley (Derwent Valley line) or Kyle of Lochalsh (Kyle of Lochalsh line). JacobTheRox(talk | contributions) 07:25, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
And as a local I can confirm that Hertford Loop is just as well known as the other names. Difficultly north (talk) Time, department skies 16:54, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Here are some sources supporting the capitalised line: Network Rail, Community Rail Network, Enfield Society, The Hertford Loop Line book by C T Goode published 1984, Friends of Gordon Hill and many others. As you can see, the Hertford Loop name is not even manufactured, it is known by that by a lot of organisations and in literature and both capitalisations are in common usage. It is indeed a railway line called the Hertford Loop. Difficultly north (talk) Time, department skies 01:18, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
I just found another book published in 2010 by Middleton Press called Hertford Loop as seen here. Please do resaerch before saying somerthing is made up. Difficultly north (talk) Time, department skies 13:40, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Support, new name follows the normal pattern for British railway articles. Agree with nominator. Blythwood (talk) 22:04, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. "Loop" is very nearly universally capitalised in reliable sources. Capitalisation of "line" is more mixed, but the majority of reliable sources seem to prefer uppercasing it, so I'd support a move to Hertford Loop Line. Thryduulf (talk) 12:02, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose the primary capitalisation in reliable sources appears to be "Loop", including Network Rail, who should probably know. Similarly, the claim that the "Hertford Loop is not a thing" is a very strange one which is disproved by a five-second Google search. There are entire books about it, let alone the multiple reliable sources. Black Kite (talk) 12:51, 7 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Note: WikiProject London Transport, WikiProject Hertfordshire, WikiProject Trains, and WikiProject UK Railways have been notified of this discussion. TarnishedPathtalk 05:40, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose due to the number of sources using capitalised "Loop" 10mmsocket (talk) 06:16, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose Yes, The Hertford Loop is a specific thing, and it's regularly described as such in modern sources. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:40, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. c.f. Hounslow Loop line (). Bazza 7 (talk) 15:30, 8 September 2025 (UTC)
