I am disclosing a conflict of interest: I work at DigiDNA, the company that develops iMazing. Per Wikipedia's COI guidelines, I am not editing the article directly but am instead submitting this request for review.

I am proposing two changes to the iMazing article:

1. Addition of a new "Features" section covering seven topics: backup and data management, media and file transfer, messaging and personal data export, app management, security (Spyware Analyzer), iMazing Mini, and enterprise features (iMazing Configurator).

2. Removal of the existing "Description" section, whose content is fully absorbed by the new Features section. Keeping both would create redundancy and weaken the article's structure.

All claims in the proposed section are supported exclusively by independent third-party sources, including Macworld, 9to5Mac, iMore, MacStories, MacRumors, iDownloadBlog, MacTrast, and Amnesty International. No primary or official iMazing sources are used for factual claims. The tone is neutral and descriptive throughout.

Features

Backup and data management

iMazing enables users to create local backups of iOS devices to a Mac or Windows computer, independently of iCloud and iTunes.^[1] Backups are incremental, meaning that each subsequent backup records only changes made since the previous one, while preserving a timestamped history of past snapshots that users can browse and restore from individually.^[2] Technology reviewers have compared this behavior to Apple's Time Machine backup system for Mac.^[3] Backups are stored in a proprietary format on the host computer and do not require an internet connection.^[4]

Users can browse the contents of any backup snapshot and restore individual items — such as contacts, messages, photos, or application data — without performing a full device restore.^[3]^[2]

iMazing also allows selective device-to-device data transfer between iOS devices via a computer, enabling users to move specific data categories rather than performing a complete migration.^[1]^[3]

Media and file transfer

iMazing supports bidirectional transfer of music, videos, ringtones, and ebooks between an iOS device and a computer, operating independently of iTunes or the Apple Music library.^[1] Users can copy media files from a device to a computer or add files to a device without using Apple's media management applications.^[4] The software also provides access to the on-device file system, allowing users to copy documents between apps and a computer.^[1]

Messaging and personal data

iMazing allows users to access and export SMS, iMessage, and WhatsApp message histories stored in an iOS device backup.^[2] Conversations can be exported in several formats, including PDF, Microsoft Excel (.xlsx), comma-separated values (CSV), and plain text, with attachments preserved where applicable.^[1]^[5]

The software also provides export functionality for contacts (vCard format), calendars (iCal/.ics format), and notes (plain text or CSV).^[1]

App management

iMazing supports the installation of iOS application packages (.ipa files) on connected devices and allows users to archive installed applications locally.^[5]^[6] This functionality operates outside of the App Store distribution mechanism.

Security

In August 2021, iMazing introduced a Spyware Analyzer feature in version 2.14.^[7] The feature is built on the Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT), an open-source forensic tool developed by Amnesty International's Security Lab and published in July 2021.^[8] The tool analyzes device backups for indicators of compromise (IOCs) associated with known spyware, including Pegasus (developed by NSO Group), KingsPawn (attributed to QuaDream), and malware associated with Operation Triangulation.^[9]

The Spyware Analyzer performs detection only and does not remove identified threats.^[7] It is available without account registration in the application's trial mode.^[9]

iMazing Mini

iMazing Mini is a companion application for macOS that runs as a menu bar utility.^[10] It enables scheduled automatic backups of connected iOS devices over a local Wi-Fi network without requiring a persistent internet connection or manual initiation by the user.^[11] The application is available at no cost, separately from the main iMazing application.^[10]

Enterprise features

iMazing Configurator is a separate application targeting IT administrators managing fleets of Apple devices in organizational environments.^[2] It supports the deployment of configuration profiles, device supervision, and migration between mobile device management (MDM) platforms. The tool is designed for use in enterprise and institutional deployments of iOS, iPadOS, and other Apple operating systems.
