infobox pictures

is there a reason the infobox pictures were changed? it's not a matter of utmost importance but i'm not a fan of how it looks now, especially with the "skyline of osaka" viewed as the cover image for the city (from anywhere in particular by-the-by?). it just feels unrepresentative, whereas there was more context and slightly more content in the previous revision.--Plifal (talk) 04:29, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

Comments and questions

1. "It is unclear when this name gained prominence over Naniwa".

It is also unclear what this reference to Naniwa means. It seems to me appropriate that this comment should be clarified and explained. From what I see it is somewhat explained later in the article ("Asuka and Nara period" subsection). That explanation should come much earlier.

2. "Edo writers aspired to samurai culture, and saw themselves as poor but generous, chaste, and public spirited."

What's the meaning of "public spirited"?

3. "He then fell back on a project that included the suppression of the 24 wards of Osaka".

Who is "He"? I can see a "[who?]" tag has been added. From the context I suspect "He" should be "It", referring to "The plan" from the previous sentence. Please clarify.

4. "There were 144,123 registered foreigners, the two largest groups being Korean (60,110) and Chinese (39,551)."

When? A year is appropriate for reference.

5a. "The Osaka Shiki Theater is one of the nine private halls operated nationwide by the Shiki Theater, staging straight plays and musicals."

What's the meaning of "straight" in the sentence?

5b. "Festival Hall was a hall hosting various performances including noh, kyōgen, kabuki, ballets as well as classic concerts."

Should "classic" be more appropriately "classical"?

5c. "The hall has closed at the end of 2008, planned to re-open in 2013 in a new facility."

Update as necessary. If it re-opened in 2013 then confirm it by revising the sentence.

6. "Learned society".

What does it mean?

7. The "Leisure facilities and high-rise buildings" list should be split in two.

8. The "Modern architecture" list needs more information for "Around Umeda", "Around Osaka Castle", both of them vague.

Manchester, United Kingdom is now an official sister city of Osaka

It has been announced as of September 6th 2025 that Manchester has become an official sister city of Osaka - the first in 35 years. I feel this should be added to this article but it's not yet listed on the reference link used for validation, and there is a note from another editor NOT to add Manchester to the list - although this was added way before this official announcement. Sources to this can be found here in English: https://www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk/news/greater-manchester-signs-historic-sister-city-agreement-with-osaka-as-japan-week-gets-underway/ and also here in Japanese: https://www.city.osaka.lg.jp/keizaisenryaku/page/0000657490.html

I'm unsure how best to add this to the current article. Maybe we need to wait for the City of Osaka website to update their own list before doing so, or would it be acceptable to add Manchester to the article right now with a reference to one of the above links?
