Talk:Stellar mass

Reworking

This article should almost certainly be reworked -- "stellar mass" is only used to refer to the mass in stars of a given galaxy. BaryonCycle (talk) 19:07, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

Potentially this article could be re-named, but I am uncertain as to what its purpose is. BaryonCycle (talk) 19:09, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
My biggest concern is stating that astronomers "use stellar mass to refer to the mass of a star", which is not true. I think there might be a place for the content on the article, but definitely not in this article. BaryonCycle (talk) 19:19, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
I agree the exact phrase "stellar mass" is not widely used, but the term "mass" is already taken as an article title. Perhaps a title with a disambiguator? There is also an article stellar mass loss, inevitably overlap. Lithopsian (talk) 19:22, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
I think a new title all together works best. I think "Mass of stars", or something along those lines, works well. I think the article should be largely re-worked as well, since much of it just refers to stellar evolution paths as opposed to actual consequences of varying masses (such as whether pp-chain or CNO dominates energy output, e.g.). Especially since properties does not include any discussion on photometric or spectral properties, or surface temps, and thus standard classifications.
I am willing to rework it over the weekend. BaryonCycle (talk) 19:29, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
Re:actual consequences of mass ranges -- I should have said "in-depth" discussion of CNO, pp, etc. BaryonCycle (talk) 19:33, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
