Government in Info Box

The info box, under the heading "Government" gives the number of Federal and State electoral divisions which are located in metropolitan Sydney. This is misleading, as it will give casual readers the impression that these electoral divisions represent the government of Sydney. They do not. Metropolitan Sydney does not have a government. There are two issues; 1) if we wish to include this information in the info box, it should be given an accurate heading such as "Representation in lower house of State and Federal parliament" 2) I would argue that this information is sufficiently important to warrant inclusion in the infobox. The info box is only supposed to include key information that is in the article. it should not include complex information that is best explained in prose, and it certainly should not be misleading, as the current information patently is. See WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE. @Shrubshire Please label this information correctly and add citations. Then add it to the body of the article. Or remove it from the info box. For the record, i didn't add this section to the infobox, but i think it should be kept nonetheless. I think renaming the section is a good compromise. There's an equivalent government section in the infoboxes for every other aussie capital city page and it doesn't make sense to remove it from sydney's. Shrubshire (talk) 03:36, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
That's fine. The heading I proposed is a little long and awkward, so perhaps a footnote would be better. Could you also include a fully explanation in the government section of the article? I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment. Thanks/ Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 03:38, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
The infobox headings are part of the infobox Australian Place template. That template is locked unless someone requests an edit. I don't have the powers (and i also don't think i'm competent enough) to change those headings right now. As i'm sure you're aware, the aussie city infoboxes have recently had a blanket re-format and so the current headings, sections and formatting are likely not final. I think we can just add footnotes for the time being. Shrubshire (talk) 03:46, 4 November 2025 (UTC)

The problem is that there is no official definition of Sydney or Greater Sydney and we can't say there is when there isn't. Cities like NYC, London and Paris have clear, legislated boundaries. Sydney does not. The most commonly used boundary for statistical purposes is the ABS Greater Sydney Region, but this is just their boundary in order to make stable population estimates easier over time. It is not the "true" boundary of Sydney. There is a separate article on Greater Sydney which uses various definition for Greater Sydney. Many of these are ad hoc constructions with little commonality. The article on Greater Sydney was merged some years ago and was demerged again a couple of years ago. I think the two articles need to be merged again and the various definitions listed and briefly discussed in the article. Once this is done, we can produce maps of the major boundaries.
