1967 studio album by Mississippi John Hurt From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Immortal Mississippi John Hurt is the second studio album, but fourth album altogether recorded by folk/blues musician Mississippi John Hurt.[1] It was released posthumously by Vanguard Records in 1967, as Hurt had died from a heart attack on November 2, 1966. Like his previous release, Today!, The Immortal is an eclectic blend of both traditional folk and blues songs, Christian hymns, and original compositions, all recorded solo and acoustic (with the exception of two tracks).[2]

Over the years, the album has been well received. Brain Beatty, of Allmusic, gave the album a four-and-a-half out of five star rating, calling it "one of the best albums of country blues ever recorded", and that it left "little doubt as to why Hurt was so beloved after his rediscovery".[2] Robert Christgau, in collaboration with fellow critic David Fricke, placed the album on their "40 Essential Albums of 1967" list for Rolling Stone.[3]
