One of four brothers. Spent three years in Germany navy. Sailed from Kiel in 1888 to Malta, Cape Town, New Zealand, Zanzibar, Madagascar, China, India, Hong Kong and San Francisco aboard Iron Covered Corvette Frigate SMS Leipzig. Warfare engagement with Araba. Jumped ship. Served as ship's cook. Play violin for the captain. Opened a german restaurant in SF. Hardware store on corner of Bush and Divisadero
