If you are a new editor...

...I'd recommend reading these essays:

  • Wikipedia is in the real world. Actions have consequences, and things written on the internet are hard to take back.
  • Ten Simple Rules for Women in Red. This essay contains very good, concise, and generally applicable advice on article creation. It takes 2 minutes to read and I'd recommend it to anyone creating their first article (on any topic).

...and here is some personal advice:

  • Your combination of knowledge, culture, and experience is unique in the world. You could contribute something valuable to Wikipedia. If you want to do so, the best time to start is now.

Editing tips and tricks

The pipe trick

The pipe trick automatically simplifies certain wikilinks. For example:

  • [[Billy (pygmy hippopotamus)|]] displays as Billy.
  • [[Ambato, Ecuador|]] displays as Ambato.
  • [[Help:pipe trick|]] displays as pipe trick.
Copyright rules by territory

Commons:Copyright rules by territory is an accessible guide to the complex mess known as copyright law.

Tools
pwiki

fastily.github.io/pwiki/ is a Python library for interacting with the MediaWiki API. Be careful as there aren't any guardrails.

The referencing template

Template:R is a neat and readable way of invoking references. It can take multiple arguments. For example: {{r|ref1|ref2}} is equivalent to <ref name="ref1" /><ref name="ref2" />.

List-defined references

References don't need to be defined inline. See WP:LDR, or see User:GanzKnusper/ldr for an example.
