Gregory P. Copenhaver shares joint appointments as a Professor in the Department of Biology and the Integrative Program for Biological and Genome Sciences (IBGS) at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill[1]. He served as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at UNC from 2021 to 2023, and since 2023 has served as an Associate Provost. Greg’s research focuses on chromosome dynamics and the mechanisms of inheritance.[2] He is an Associate Member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UNC Center for Bioethics and the Curriculum in Genetics. Greg obtained his BS (with high distinction) from University of California Riverside in 1990 and his PhD in Biology and Biomedical Sciences from the Washington University in St. Louis in 1996. He completed his postdoctoral studies in Genetics at The University of Chicago in 2001. In 2005 he was elected as the President of the North Carolina Academy of Science.[3] He served as the Director of Graduate Studies (Biology – MCDB) at UNC and served as Editor-in-Chief for the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS Genetics from 2008 to 2024.[4] He was elected as a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 2019[5], a Fellow of The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)[6] in 2020, and a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors in 2024. In addition, he co-founded the biotechnology company Chromatin Inc.[7][8] He has also authored or co-authored numerous research papers including publications in Science, Nature, PLoS Genetics, eLife, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Nature Genetics.
