Early life and music career

Walker grew up in Vermillion, South Dakota. After graduating from Vermillion High School, he and his bandmates deferred their college scholarships to pursue music full-time, co-founding the alternative rock band Paradise Fears with childhood friends in 2007.[3] As the band's keyboardist and vocalist, Walker was part of the group's rise through the independent music scene, which included tours with All Time Low, Andy Grammer, Rachel Platten, and Parachute.[4]

In their early years, the band members lived out of their van and slept in parking lots while working to build a following.[5] They funded their debut album Yours Truly, which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Uncharted Chart and sold 24,000 copies.[3] Walker and his bandmates called the approach "tour hacking" – they would show up at concerts by other artists and sell CDs directly to fans waiting in line.[6] The approach attracted the attention of All Time Low, who invited Paradise Fears to open on their 2011 tour.[1]

Paradise Fears' 2013 EP Battle Scars reached No. 2 on the iTunes Alternative chart and No. 19 on the Overall Album Chart. The band signed with Nashville label DigSin in 2014, placed third in the Macy's Rising Star competition that same year,[4] and released their full-length album Life in Real Time in December 2015. Over their career, Paradise Fears accumulated over 24 million streams across platforms and 17 million views on YouTube.[6]

Modern Musician

After approximately eight years of touring, Walker transitioned from performing to music education and entrepreneurship.[2] He founded Modern Musician, a company that teaches independent musicians how to make a living through online marketing and direct fan relationships.[6] His approach has been covered by music industry outlets including Ari's Take, Two Story Melody, Music 3.0, and Nashville Voyager.[6][1][2][5]

In 2020, Modern Musician organized the Success With Music Virtual Music Conference. The Recording Academy listed the conference on Grammy.com as one of five virtual music industry conferences recommended for career development.[7] The conference featured speakers including Taylor Swift's former manager Rick Barker and Bandsintown CEO Fabrice Sergent.

In April 2026, Modern Musician hosted Modern Musician Live, a free two-day virtual summit for independent artists. The event marked the public launch of StreetTeam, an artist revenue platform, and included an Industry Leader Panel on fan monetization and the creator economy.[8]

In July 2025, Modern Musician co-facilitated, alongside Artemis Music, the transmission of Ringo Starr's "Peace and Love" birthday message to the International Space Station as part of the former Beatle's 85th birthday celebration. The transmission was sent from a mission control room in Houston, Texas, to NASA ground stations and beamed to the ISS as it orbited Earth. Music from five Modern Musician artists was also sent to space as part of the mission.[9]

Walker hosts the Modern Musician Podcast, which has featured guests including Grammy Award-winning mixing engineer Derek Ali, the president of CD Baby Molly Neuman, the CEO of Bandsintown Fabrice Sergent, the head of A&R at SoundCloud Chris Johnson, and the CEO of Epidemic Sound Oscar Höglund.[10][11][12][13][14] In a collaboration with Neuralink patient Noland Arbaugh, Walker and Arbaugh discussed creating what they described as "the world's first telepathic song," using Arbaugh's brain-computer interface and AI music tools.[15]

Walker has described StreetTeam as software developed through Modern Musician to help artists grow fanbases.[16]
