Background
British rule over Hong Kong began in 1839 when, during the First Opium War, British forces occupied Hong Kong Island. This became a British colony under the terms of the treaty that ended the war in 1841. The colony was expanded to include the Second Opium War as part of the peace treaty at the conclusion of the Second Opium War in 1860. In 1898 the British government secured a 99 year lease over the New Territories.[1]
Prelude
The British Government began preparations for the re-occupation in 1943, with the Hong Kong Planning Unit being established in London. The Foreign Office later handled much of the planning.[2]
