About Me
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Hi I'm Stitchbird2, also known as Heidi Meudt. I live in Wellington, New Zealand. I'm a Botany Curator at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
I am an active Wikimedian in Wikidata, English and Spanish Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and several WikiProjects, mainly on topics related to biodiversity, especially botany, taxonomy, plant species, herbarium specimens, scientists (especially botanists, botanical collectors, women scientists and New Zealanders) and scientific papers.
For more detailed information on my contributions see this summary on Wikiscan and this outreach dashboard.
I enjoy disambiguating and linking names of scientists and helping make their scientific research and contributions more visible.
I regularly attend the monthly Wiki Wellington meet up.

My areas of expertise are in the taxonomy and evolution of alpine plants in the southern hemisphere, especially New Zealand but also Australia, New Guinea, Chile, and Argentina. I have taxonomic expertise in the plant genera Ourisia, Plantago, and Veronica (all in the plant family Plantaginaceae) and the forget-me-nots (Myosotis, Boraginaceae). More detail on my academic contributions are outlined in my ORCID profile.
I started editing under User:Stitchbird in 2019 but I lost my password and didn’t have the username attached to an email. I have been editing regularly as of 2022 under User:Stitchbird2.
I'm also on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
Currently working on (as at October 2025)
- I am co-organiser of the WikiProject ASBS 2025 which is a package of Wiki outreach to the Australasian botanical community for which my colleague Ambrosia10 and I received funding from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand. Together with Ambrosia10, we will attend the 2025 Australasian Systematic Botany Society Conference from 2 - 6 November 2025 in Armidale, Australia. As part of this international outreach, we
- have organised and run a one-hour online onboarding introductory workshop (14 October 2025),
- will put on a full-day in-person conference workshop to up to 25 botanists (2 November 2025),
- will present a 10-minute oral presentation about our Wiki outreach in the international botanical community entitled, "Botanists in the Wikiverse" on 4 November 2025 (slides and script on Zenodo), and
- continue to Wikify the conference, especially adding conference attendees and other ASBS society members (over 130 and counting) and their research to Wikidata.
- I am a co-author on the extended abstract and talk for Living Data 2025 from 21 - 24 October 2025 in Bogotá, Colombia entitled, "Wiki loves iNaturalist: How Wikimedians integrate iNaturalist content on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons" with co-authors and fellow Wikimedians Tiago Lubiana (first author and presenter), Richard Littauer, Siobhan Leachman, Jan Ainali, Manoj Karingamadathil, Andra Waagmeester, Heidi M. Meudt and Dario Taraborelli.
- Because of our regular and consistent biodiversity Wiki outreach in the New Zealand and specifically Wellington area, Ambrosia10 and I have been asked by the management of Ōtari-Wilton's Bush to participate as Wikimedians in their upcoming BioBlitz to be held at Ōtari's native botanic garden during the 2026 iNaturalist City Nature Challenge from 24 - 27 April 2026. Ambrosia10 and I will be actively involved in planning and doing Wiki outreach during the event, as well as Wikifying and taking part in this exciting opportunity.
- Similarly, Ambrosia10 and I are pursuing another outreach opportunity with the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network Conference to be held in Wellington from 12 - 15 October 2026. We are in discussions with the conference organising team about putting on a half-day or full-day Wiki for Botanists workshop on 11 October 2026 for conference attendees, who will be from the New Zealand botanical community. Together with Ambrosia10 and Noracrentiss, we are also planning a third annual two-day New Zealand species edit-a-thon around these dates.
- I continue to edit regularly on Wikidata, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons on biodiversity topics, especially those on botany, botanists, plant species, and research publications, often regarding New Zealand, women, or the Global South. On Wikidata, I regularly add and link scientists and their publications; on Wikipedia I improve and create New Zealand plant species articles (especially of species in the genera Ourisia, Plantago, Veronica and Myosotis (see section below: "Species pages I'm working on"), and on Commons I add images of plant and insect species, together with their structured data, from iNaturalist using the iNat2Wiki tool.

Creation of Wikipedia articles in my area of expertise
I’ve been briefed on the conflict of interest rules including those around being a subject-matter expert editing within my area of expertise. I understand that I’m expected to make sure that my external role and relationships in my field of expertise do not interfere with my primary role when editing Wikipedia i.e. to further the interests of the encyclopaedia.
Because of the topic of my expertise and specialisation I will be citing peer reviewed journal papers that I have authored or co-authored. I will also be writing Wikipedia articles on species where I was a key researcher in the process of taxonomic identification for that species. I am aware of the possibility of a conflict of interest issue with citing my own published work. Papers I have authored or co-authored will only be cited if that paper is relevant to the topic and conforms to the content policies of Wikipedia. Any citation will not be excessive nor will it place undue emphasis on my work. I will be citing the most recent quality research available whether it is by me or someone else.

About meI am a paid employee of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa), an autonomous Crown entity of New Zealand that provides a forum in which the nation may present, explore, and preserve both the heritage of its cultures and knowledge of the natural environment in order to better understand and treasure the past, enrich the present, and meet the challenges of the future. We are working to make our holdings, publications, and other resources more accessible to the public by engaging directly with the Wikimedia Foundation projects Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
Conflict of interest statementWhen I am editing the Wikimedia Foundation projects Wikipedia, Wikidata or contributing to Wikimedia Commons as part of my official professional duties, I always strive to strictly abide by the accepted practices on conflicts of interest, neutrality, and notability of that particular project. Because Te Papa's educational mission is in line with Wikipedia's mission to disseminate knowledge freely, I will not make edits that I do not believe are in accordance with that Wikimedia Foundation projects practices and procedures. Therefore, I will not make substantive edits to articles related to Te Papa as an agency (e.g. Te Papa), or its personnel. Instead, my edits and contributions will be to contribute subject matter expertise, for example to improve articles about Te Papa holdings or subjects relating to New Zealand (e.g. Phar Lap, New Zealand art). You can find out more about this project at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa WikiProject. Te Papa’s work on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons is being governed by internal guidelines, which we have published on-wiki in our WikiProject page. If you believe I have made an error or violated Wikipedia’s norms, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is also listed on this page in case I am not regularly checking my talk page.

- Add script for "Script Installer" which puts an "Install" button for automatically installing scripts to common.js page on Wikidata.
- Add script for "Author Strings" which 1) now adds icons to author names in "author string" to a) search for author on Wikidata, b) add author QID to this author (which moves author from author string to author) and c) create a new author and assign this one. AND it adds "Author Strings" back in. I've had that before but it was slowing things down, hopefully this will now work!
