Who do we talk to about EnterpriseyBot being down?

Is it Legoktm and 0xDeadbeef? Is it Enterprisey? Is it someone else? I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 02:41, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

@I dream of horses: I should be able to help. What specifically is down, is it the defcon updates? Legoktm (talk) 03:04, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
@Legoktm It hasn't edited at all in six days, so I'm guessing DEFCON, and also everything else. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 03:06, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:30, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

The Brilliant Idea Barnstar
Hello, Enterprisey! I was in thought today about how Wikipedia has changed over the last decade, and you crossed my mind. See those “Reply” buttons which appear after every comment on every talk page for every single user on Wikipedia? That was you. That was your idea. In my opinion, your “reply-link” tool has been perhaps the most profound technical tool idea in this project’s history—eliminating wiki-syntax knowledge as a barrier to entry for newcomers to Wikipedia’s discussion space. While the WMF developed the current ubiquitous iteration of the tool, there is no doubt in my mind that it would not exist if not for you. I hope life is treating you well in your present endeavors. Mz7 (talk) 07:08, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
You just came into mind for me as well, Enterprisey. Reiterating what Mz7 said. I hope that life is treating you well. --TheSandDoctor Talk 21:38, 6 July 2025 (UTC)
Just saw this! Thank you both very much for the kind words, I appreciate them so much :) I guess it is pretty convenient that all I had to do to reply to this comment was to press a button, haha. I'm doing great! Everything's going well. Seems like y'all are having fun over here too, I certainly may still be back someday. Actually just nearly went to WCNA 2025 (although I was a little late and even the waitlist couldn't save me). I hope you both are doing well too. Enterprisey (talk!) 04:17, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

Unsalt an article

Is it possible to unsalt James Naleski since he's in the administration so eventually I can write a stub. He doesn't have the press yet. But I don't know where to begin with salted name creation.

I'm looking to write an article for a non-profit and George Janko in my spare time. Judiciousrobbers (talk) 20:24, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

@Judiciousrobbers. Enterprisey is inactive. He doesn't have the press yet doesn't sound like a very persuasive reason to unsalt. Maybe it'd be better to write Draft:James Naleski and submit that through the WP:AFC process? If it is accepted, AFCers will handle the un-salting for you. –Novem Linguae (talk) 21:45, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
What does WP:AFC mean? Judiciousrobbers (talk) 16:25, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
@Judiciousrobbers. AFC stands for Articles for Creation. It's a way to make a "draft", which has less stringent rules than a regular article, and which won't be affected by the SALT. If you want to go straight to writing the draft, you can use the article wizard. –Novem Linguae (talk) 19:51, 9 July 2025 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.

Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Enterprisey. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

Temporary account IP viewer user right

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences Appearance Advanced options Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Glitch on your AFCRHS script

Hey there,

I was alerted by @Jlwoodwa (courtesy ping) to an issue in your AFCR helper script (see my talk page for more info). If it detects a colon in the name it will assume the preceding text to be a namespace without checking to see if it is a valid namespace. For example, when I created the redirect Scene 113: The Bridge, it assumed the namespace to be "Scene 113" which obviously doesn't exist, resulting in the talk page being created at Scene 113 talk: The Bridge rather than at Talk:Scene 113: The Bridge. I recommend adding a regex check against the valid namespaces to ensure this doesn't happen again. Thanks! Aydoh8[what have I done now?] 06:36, 6 January 2026 (UTC)

It doesn't seem to be active though? Is there any potential for getting it running?
