Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

The Gloaming (tv series) revert

Why was this reverted? There was significant information added within the infobox and sources provided. All your reverting did was remove a lot of hard work - information obtained by looking at the credits in each episode.

--2001:8004:1243:5327:2442:AD5E:2976:1DB2 (talk) 05:21, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

The Gloaming (tv series)

How can the dates be wrong? It was officially released on Jan 1, 2020, never "broadcast", but made available to stream sometime before 10pm Dec 31, 2020. ISAN is a reference much like a production code as other tv series articles have. The article reads like a broken record as is, repeating the same information over and over in a couple of paragraphs. Why do you act like you own the entire article anyway? Anyone can contribute if I remember correctly.

--149.167.157.27 (talk) 09:07, 9 January 2020 (UTC)

The Gloaming

Okay look, I think maybe we both thought each other was being a bit rash with the article. Going forward I would like to bring it up to a good standard which I’m sure we can both do.

--149.167.157.27 (talk) 06:19, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

west oz meetup yesterday

we are interested in getting good maps from the meetup,

which involved more starts of regional categories/projects ...

(Kimberley and Pilbara already existed)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Western_Australia/Regional_Projects so interested about producing maps for the regions - hopefully within the ambit of osm or whatever there is a link -https://catalogue.data.wa.gov.au/dataset/regional-development-commission-boundaries

would that be a reasonable item to help create a more viable and usable map than https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Regions_of_Western_Australia.svg which hardly allows for breaking up into the regions or more detail

any thoughts? JarrahTree 04:19, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

@JarrahTree:: Sure, I would love to help with this! That link on the WA data catalogue was the same dataset I tried to send you a few months ago as a Google Maps KML, so yes, that's the one that any maps of the regions should use. The region boundaries have not been imported into OpenStreetMap, which is unfortunate as that would enable zoomable "slippy maps" using the Wikimaps service (which were discussed at length here). The map data is CC-BY 4.0 licenced but OSM would need explicit permission from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to import it. I can produce any vector maps you need for Commons pretty easily though—such as maps of the region zoomed in, with the localities and main towns/cities visible and labelled—which might be the next best thing to an embedded map. I'll do some samples and get your thoughts or suggestions. There is another option too, which I haven't explored much but apparently it is possible to upload boundary vectors to Commons and link to Wikidata—but I don't know much about this yet... --Canley (talk) 05:12, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, will get back to you on some of that soon... -- JarrahTree 10:56, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title.

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Members of the Northern Territory Legislative Council, 1951–1954

Hello. I've just created Douglas Macinnis. In his Who's who biography, it states that he was a member of the Northern Territory Legislative Council during the period 1951–1952. However, he's not in this list. Is who's who wrong, or is the list incomplete? Cheers, Number 57 13:41, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

@Number 57: I think I left it off. I found a mention in my sources but the name is spelt differently: Douglas Evans MacInnes (Official Member) 15 February 1952 – 8 August 1952. I have added him to the list now, thanks. --Canley (talk) 21:35, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

Swingers

I have noticed there have been quite a few good faith edits to election results such as this one changing the swing to simple arithmetic rather than adjusting for the redistribution. While these are easy enough to resolve as they come up - the swing is verified by the cited AEC source - it makes me wonder whether we should have something in the lead, not because it will reduce the number of misguided edits, but simply because its an indication that readers are looking at the numbers and asking the question. I was thinking something simple, but would need to find a reliable source. --Find bruce (talk) 07:03, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

@Find bruce: It's always difficult to explain the whole redistribution and notional results thing, and yes, a lot of good faith edits because it's so counter-intuitive and just looks wrong. I added a section about "Notional seat status" at Redistribution (Australia) a while ago. Probably worth mentioning in the intro of a results list for a state/territory which had a redistribution. It could point to that section, or one of Antony Green's calculation reports maybe? --Canley (talk) 06:30, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
