I don't live on Cullen Ct, but I like the street sign

Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" or "Add topic" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Debra and I made it to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 2:20 PM on Friday, September 11. Jim Heaphy (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Question from Vaibhavbaweja (22:33, 13 March 2026)

Can I edit or add on big pages like Lust? I feel that in Indian religions sections, there was no info on about Hinduism and Jainism --Vaibhavbaweja (talk) 22:33, 13 March 2026 (UTC)

Hello, Vaibhavbaweja. Welcome to Wikipedia. Lust is not protected so anyone can edit it. You need to summarize what reliable, published sources say, and you need to create and add references to those sources. Please follow the Neutral point of view and do not add your personal opinions or experiences to the article. Cullen328 (talk) 03:39, 14 March 2026 (UTC)

Of the four topics I helped to bring to the main page, I'm most proud of a woman's work, so made it my story. As it happens, last year's story OTD was about the woman. Perhaps your sister is interested? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:46, 16 March 2026 (UTC)

Question from Oreofatdan (14:30, 23 March 2026)

How should I judge external links? --ieatsandasasnack (talk) 14:31, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

Hello, Oreofatdan. The guideline can be found at Wikipedia:External links. Please let me know if you have a more specific question. Why are you using a signature that is completely different from your user name? That can be confusing. Cullen328 (talk) 17:01, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
oh sorry i cant figure out how to change it lol ieatsandasasnack (talk) 17:22, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

Question from MirahJ444 (20:52, 26 March 2026)

Note: MirahJ444's mentor Matrix is away.

Hello Matrix and Cullen328,

I am trying to find sources that will compile my groups bibliography. How do I add articles to that? --MirahJ444 (talk) 20:52, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

Hello, MirahJ444. I am sorry but your question is unclear to me. Please try to be more specific. I see that you are a student editor working through a course. Have you discussed this with your instructor? Are you familiar with Wikipedia: Citation templates? Cullen328 (talk) 06:22, 27 March 2026 (UTC)

Question from Gustavdentredjeagust (18:01, 30 March 2026)

How do I make my own wiki --Gustavdentredjeagust (talk) 18:01, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

Hello, Gustavdentredjeagust, and welcome to Wikipedia. Please read and study Your first article. Feel free to ask more specific questions. Cullen328 (talk) 19:51, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

War and Peace (novel)

Hello Jim: I am reading this novel and looked to Wikipedia for info. The article describes the novel under four "books", but the same article states the novel has four "volumes" and fifteen books. Should I change "book" to "volume"? It's a bit confusing for any novice such as I. Thanks! from Bob (RajahKitty died.) RajahKitty (talk) 01:46, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

Hello, RajahKitty. The Wikipedia article should describe and number the "volumes" and "books" of this novel as academic experts on the novel describe it. If there is significant disagreement among literary critics about the nomemclature, then that should be reflected in the article. That could be along the lines of "Professor A says the novel has four books, but scholar B says that there are 15 books in the novel." So, start by reading the reliable sources that are referenced in the article to learn more about the matter. You may want to consult other scholarly sources. You can also discuss the discrepancy on the article's talk page. Cullen328 (talk) 07:39, 2 April 2026 (UTC)

Question from Lostpines (02:07, 3 April 2026)

Note: Lostpines's mentor Vacant0 is away.

Hi Cullen328! I was following the new editor suggestions, and it recommended I add some links to the Northwest Passage page. However, I received a warning immediately after doing so accusing me of making test edits, which are a violation for which I can be banned. Can you help me understand what I'm doing wrong? Thanks! --Lostpines (talk) 02:07, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

Hello, Lostpines. Your edit to that page regarding Barbara Wilson (author) created an unnecesary redlink and was not helpful to the reader. Whoever wrote that sentence intended to display both the author's real name and their pen name without a red link. This is a common type of formatting error by new editors, and the warning should have been to simply to advise you to verify that any edit you make actually improves the encyclopedia instead of accidentally lowering its quality. I think that Adakiko should have given you a milder warning because your edit was certainly not vandalism. As for banning, that is a very severe penalty that would never be applied in a circumstance like this, so do not worry about that. Just proceed with care. Cullen328 (talk) 04:19, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
@Lostpines: I agree it was too harsh. BTW: that was an automatic huggle warning given Lostpines' previous level 2 warning. Cheers Adakiko (talk) 00:35, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! Lostpines (talk) 12:46, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation! I'll look for info on when a red link is improving vs. lowering quality. Lostpines (talk) 12:46, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
Lostpines, it is never a good idea to create a red link to a topic when an article about the topic or substantive content about the topic exists. Instead, you wikilink to that article, or use a piped link to that content. Cullen328 (talk) 04:22, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
