Hello, DevonHalDraedle,
Categories on Wikipedia exist in a very extensive category hierarchy that consists of millions of levels. So, if you create a category, you have to assign it appropriate parent categories that this newly created category is a child of. If you can't imagine what these might be, then look at a similar category to see what its parents categories consist of. Sometimes there are templates for certain kinds of categories that automatically assign parent categories but in case one doesn't exist for your newly created category, you'll have to manually assign its parent categories.
If you have questions about categories or editing on Wikipedia, feel free to bring them to the Teahouse. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 04:31, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
Adding the Gallery template to lone images
Hi, I noticed your edits on WP:PALEOART, where you changed a few lone images to use the Gallery template. When I saw these, I thought that they were odd, since going through some of the newer archives of the page shows that the majority of the lone images that pass through WP:PALEOART are formatted by just transcluding the file itself, and not any other template. After that, I thought if I should revert your formatting edits, but I figured that I should talk to you about it first. BlueEleephant (talk) 18:08, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hmm, well I mostly do it to stop the images from overflowing into other sections, as before its gotten to points where piece is like, over a dozen sections down from its actual section.
- Also, from what I see in general there doesn't seem to be a general consensus on how images are done? Some people also use the Gallery template for lone images (Like LiterallyMiguel, Ta-tea-two-te-to, Junsik1223, etc.), whilst others don't (Houcaris\Zhenghecaris, yourself, Hemiauchenia, etc.), but I think it would be a good idea to get something sorted out on that front maybe (Obviously I'd be in favour of the Galley template being used so keep images in their respective sections). - Oh, I see your point. I typically would think of image overflows as unavoidable, but now I realize that the Gallery template does in fact, stop image overflows. Then again, how large thumbnail images appear to the user is based off of their preferences, so for some, the image won't overflow to other sections, but it does for me & you.
- I used to think that there was Policy or Guideline for Wikipedia namespace images that I didn't know of, but yeah, that is probably false. BlueEleephant (talk) 20:48, 17 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thinking about it again, maybe this is a matter for the talk page of WP:PALEOART; or WP:WPM; asking a couple editors there may turn up with a consensus, but if a consensus for stuff like this hasn't been created in the 16 years that WP:PALEOART has existed for, then I honestly kind of doubt that a consensus could be reached today, especially if less than 10 users are involved.
