Kia ora Diannaa, could you clarify which part was pinged as copyrighted? The only bit that I see missing is some of the ecosystem types, which were directly copied, because they're official names for those ecosystems. I feel that renaming them to avoid copyright would change their content completely. Did I forget to add a citation?
Thanks in advance - I'm still very new to this. Dillonjoe (talk) 21:29, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay in replying. Some of the content you added was a match for material foind in https://www.doc.govt.nz/Documents/science-and-technical/sfc325entire.pdf, which is marked as "© Copyright May 2014, New Zealand Department of Conservation".--— Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:48, 15 November 2025 (UTC)

Hi Dillonjoe. Thanks for all the work in creating this article. I have taken the liberty of reformatting the list to make the article occupy less space down the page. From this point, I have suggestions:
  • the initial content could be split off to make a new article: Grasses of New Zealand. I think this would be useful, leaving the list article as just that, with perhaps only a single paragraph introduction.
  • the grasses section in the article Flora of New Zealand#Grasses, needs a clean-up (probably the removal of most of the content), and the addition of a Template:Main beneath the Grasses heading to link to the new article (initially - but if you create a new article Grasses of New Zealand, it would need to link to that instead).
If you would like further assistance please get in touch.Marshelec (talk) 08:32, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Kia ora Marshelec,
Thank you for taking the time to reformat and finalise the article, I really appreciate it. Those are two great suggestions, and probably make more sense than how I've organised it so far. For now I'll quickly pull those bits out of the list and create the new article. I think sorting out the Flora of New Zealand page might take a bit longer, so I'll do that another time, but you're definitely right that it needs a spruce-up. I notice there's been a few taxonomic updates since that was written too!
Thanks again. Dillonjoe (talk) 08:47, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Great. I have filled in some bits in the new article Grasses of New Zealand. When you have time, please look at the edit history to see the various things I added, to make it more complete. The article could use a good photograph of an iconic grass. My personal favorite is Carex secta, but you will have your own. :). Note that it is always a good idea to ping a user when you are replying to them on your own talk page, or the talk page of an article, so they get a notification. If you type the @ character, it will automatically bring up a list of user names that you can select from._Marshelec (talk) Marshelec (talk) 09:41, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Oops, I see that Carex secta is not actually a grass. I need to pay more attention !! _Marshelec (talk) 09:43, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
I have a better suggestion for a species that would be good to feature in a photo: Chionochloa rubra._Marshelec (talk) Marshelec (talk) 19:49, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
Kia ora @Marshelec, Chionochloa rubra is a great option. I've just checked your edits to the page, and it all looks great.
At some point, I'll add a few more sections - e.g., native grasses and introduced grasses sections, where the threats can be elaborated on and some info added about which grasses are invasive and what their impacts are. I've also started to go through the grasses on the list, adding info and the NZ grasses category for those with pages, and creating stubs for those without. I've added a fair bit of NZ specific info for the introduced Sporobolus africanus and Agrostis stolonifera already.
Thank you again for your help on this page. I think generally, grasses are really underappreciated both in terms of their impacts as invasives and as native species in their own right. It's great to have some help highlighting them on wiki. Dillonjoe (talk) 03:58, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
