George Orwell
There is plenty of evidence that he served in Ceylon. I am an Orwell fan of a kind and have several books about him. For example, "Orwell, The Authorised Biography" by Michael Shelden has a whole chapter (6) called "Servant of the Empire" about his time there. Bduke (talk) 07:52, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Bduke: Thanks for this - I guess you have provided the citation I lacked. I am left wondering why is his service in Ceylon not in the main article? Obviously an oversight ripe for you to change (certainly of significant interest and the timing is critical) with citation to support the category - my challenge was around a category out of context, which is valid. All you need to do is cite the relevance to Orwell's story and by that, to serving police officers in Ceylon (to justify the category, which I will endorse). But as far as I am aware, he may have docked there on the way to Burma but never served as a policeman in Ceylon and as far as I know, Sheldon doesn't suggest any differently. Hi Geneus01. Thank you for your work on Henry Loftus (1725–1792). Another editor, Scope creep, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
Really liked this, although I noticed the notes aren't referenced.

- @Scope creep: I have engaged in scope creep in my attempts to disambiguate 18th Century "Henrys Loftus", of which there are quite a few. The latest is Lord Henry Loftus, who collaborated with that other Henry whose biography you liked. Would you mind casting a critical eye over the latest Henry? Geneus01 (talk) 09:15, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Geneus01: Yip. scope_creepTalk 09:20, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Geneus01: Its looks a very decent article. Geez there wasn't much on beforehand. There is still outstanding comment I made above, about the notes not being referenced which are a general requirement for a good article. I guess its a habit. I would also expand the lead somewhat as it doesn't summarise the article proper. I noticed he prorogued Parliament in 1767 which seems to be only done once a century sort of thing. Remember when Boris Johnson tried to do it 2019 I think, and it was big news. It caused an uproar. So that should probably be mentioned in the lede with a short summary of life. 2 or 3 lines should do it. Its now a really well written and well rounded. scope_creepTalk 09:32, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind comments: on your remarks about the notes, I went back to them on the other Henry and noted that all but three or four were followed by inline citations inside or outside the note itself - I hoped that the "outside" citations implied that the note itself derived its source from the same citation as the main text - I can double up for cover though. The remaining few I am still trying to source to published references (I obtained them from inadmissible primary sources and will delete them if I can't trace them back to secondary). I tend to use notes to extract relevant information from the main text that might otherwise break the narrative flow (trying to keep it simple).
- I will give a mention to prorogation, which happened because Townshend had a hissy fit about something he wanted to push forward and needed time to build Parliamentary support (by annoying everyone) from the Loftus Squadron, amongst others. I am trying to row back comments on the Townshends to protect the living (the current Marquess Townshend). I think they got annoyed with me when I rewrote another Townshend article.
- I have given subjective background comments in the article Talk page, as I had the other Henry (not sure whether doing so is frowned upon). Geneus01 (talk) 09:50, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi Geneus01. Thank you for your work on Arthur Loftus (1724-1781). Another editor, Klbrain, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
It's likely the parliamentarians are notable, but it would be good to confirm this with additional sources. The constiuency pages might help with suggestions. Not that the 'succession box' didn't look right (given that it suggests that he service for some years after his death), so I've amended to match the constituency pages. The 2nd constituency looked wrong too. So, another set of eyes on the these details would be helpful.
