Hi, can you make a comment about my new project Encyclopine.org

hi, Hi, can you make a comment about my new project Encyclopine.org?

Phone number for public phone box

Hi, Hassocks5489.

I was pleased to see your photo of the K6 phone booth outside St. Mary's in Shoreham. Would you happen to have a phone number for it (if it indeed remains a public phone box with a number)? I am setting up an Easter Treasure Hunt remotely, using Google Earth, and would very much like to enable a small boy to cause the phone to ring. I'd be grateful f you could reply to gordonink at gmail.com before April 2nd, 2015.

Thanks in advance for your attention to the above,

Gordonink

Please don't hate me!

I've been going through Buildings and architecture of Brighton and Hove post-peer review to try and slim it down. I've cut about 1,000 words so far but I don't think we've lost anything critical. See what you think. I think there's more tightening and elimination of redundancy to be done, and I think some of the types of architecture might have to be compressed and the details moved to other places. Maybe we need an article like Ecclesiastical architecture in Brighton and Hove? Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:52, 13 December 2025 (UTC)

Hope you had a good Christmas! I don't suppose you'd be able to get to the Jubilee Library in the near future? I want to know if this book has any useful details. It's not available on Amazon and apparently there's only one copy in the B&H library system. That's a long way to go without knowing for certain that it's available. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:50, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
A very good two days! Hope you've all had a lovely time too. I have to go into town on Monday, so I'll investigate: leave it with me! I'll report back. Advance notice for the next Brighton Meetup, by the way: on Christmas Eve I booked an incredibly cheap long weekend to Tenerife on 6-10 March, so Saturday 7th March is out for me. The week before is my birthday week though...! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:46, 26 December 2025 (UTC)
Fantastic, thank you! I can easily get to Brighton on Monday if you're free for a pint, I just don't fancy going all that way for a wasted trip.
As for a meetup, 28 Feb might work quite well and we can celebrate your birthday! Don't want to clash with Mothers' Day or Easter weekends so that and your long weekend in the sun rules out most of March. Would be good to do another one in Portsmouth when the weather is better. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:46, 27 December 2025 (UTC)
Great to see you yesterday! The visit to the library was very productive!
@Mike Peel, Thryduulf, Lcawte, Acalamari, The wub, and SilkTork: Any thoughts on a Brighton meetup on Saturday 28 February? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:17, 30 December 2025 (UTC)
I think I should be around on the 28 Feb, although it's quite a time away still. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:12, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
Likewise, I'll try and keep it free. the wub "?!" 09:31, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
I shall pencil it in. Thryduulf (talk) 18:45, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
28th is in my diary! Happy New Year to all. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 22:37, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
@Hassocks5489, @Lcawte and @HJ Mitchell there is a wrinkle - the 28th is being touted as the most likely next date for the transport race. Still TBC but likely to be confirmed this weekend. Thryduulf (talk) 23:47, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
OK – if we can't do that weekend then the 13th March would work for me, but I can't do either 21st Feb or 6th March. Keep me updated! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 23:41, 4 January 2026 (UTC)
28 Feb is confirmed for the Transport Race, which rules Chris (and likely me) out. The Transport Race might be up your street. So, how about Saturday 14 March? (cc @Thryduulf, Lcawte, Mike Peel, The wub, Acalamari, and SilkTork: for info) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:39, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
I may be in Tenerife ~7-22nd for work, not yet confirmed (but maybe see you there Hassocks5489?!). How about moving it just by a day to Sunday 1st March? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:47, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
The 1st is fine with me but Hassocks isn't usually available on Sundays, which is why we usually do the meetup on a Saturday, so I defer to him. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:53, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
I can make either the 1st or the 14th. I can't make Sunday 15th as I've committed to the Oxford meet that day. Thryduulf (talk) 22:21, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
HJ Mitchell, I can make the 14th! I'm unavailable most Sundays currently. Acalamari 02:16, 24 January 2026 (UTC)

Does the Transport Race refer to the Brighton Half Marathon? I could be tempted by that, but not in Feb near the coast. I took part in the world's rarest marathon (it only happens every 100 years!), the Hastings Marathon during December 2008, and I don't fancy repeating that, as the wind coming in from the sea during the last stretch was icy and very cutting, and I had no energy left to keep me warm. Stewards could see I was cold and struggling and would tell me to stop, but I insisted on finishing, so they would give me a space blanket. By the time I got to the finish line I was wrapped in five space blankets! SilkTork (talk) 11:24, 21 January 2026 (UTC)

  • Hey! I think Brighton War Memorial is more-or-less ready to get some feedback before I think about FAC. I need to write the lead and add some images (do you have any in your backlog?) but the research is basically done. It was well worth the trip to Jubilee Library—the book I was looking for had some useful details. Do you have any books on general Brighton history/architecture that cover it or WWI in any detail? Also, if you can add anything from newspaper archives etc about post-unveiling history (like restoration or centenary events, for example) that would be really helpful. I'll see if there's anything useful in the Wikipedia Library. And if you have time to just read it through and make sure it makes sense, especially the design section (which I will illustrate properly to help explain the description), that would be grand! Interestingly, most of the sources are Brighton-related—it was only covered in one of my war memorial books; normally it's the other way round! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:13, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
I had a dig in the British Newspaper Archives via the Wikipedia Library and Google News. I found some bits but I'm wondering if there's coverage of any restoration or cleaning or anything else between the unveiling and now. Would really appreciate any help! Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:57, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
Excellent – pleased to hear that book was useful! The author is a very well respected local historian. This week is pretty busy (work and socialising!), so I won't have much on-Wiki time, but leave it with me: I'm sure some of my books will be useful. Will also give a read-through and make any necessary edits. Watch this space! Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 23:41, 4 January 2026 (UTC)
Don't suppose you've managed to look through your books yet? I'm in the process of rewriting the Chattri at the moment; there's plenty of material on that as well! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:42, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
The Transport Race is very unlike a marathon - running is against the rules! Details are at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/transport-race-london-tickets-1980069272496?aff=discord but in summary you have 6 hours to visit 6 TfL stations, one in each of zones 1-6, and a landmark near one of them and then get back to the starting point (well, very nearly - it starts at King's Cross and finishes at St. Pancras). Thryduulf (talk) 13:12, 21 January 2026 (UTC)

Hi all – I'll try to cover anything; hopefully I haven't missed any messages!

  • Unfortunately Sundays are always completely out for me, but Saturday 14th March is good for me. I'm inclined to go for that if it's suitable with most (noting that Mike is absent).
  • May well see you in Tenerife, Mike! I'm staying in Santa Cruz near the Plaza Weyler tram stop. Ping me here nearer the time if you fancy meeting one evening.
  • Transport Race sounds fun: I might look that up in a future year if it is a regular event. (I'm out at a beer festival on the Friday night, so might not feel like travelling up to London the next morning!)
  • I haven't had a chance to look for any more war memorial (or indeed Chattri) info in my books yet – sorry, have been really busy with off-Wiki stuff. I still need to finish writing a book review by the end of next week, but I'll try to carve out some time to help with those two articles. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 16:20, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
Transport Race typically happens a few times a year, but not on a fixed schedule as it depends on the availability of the organisers, what engineering works are happening and what major events are happening in London. Thryduulf (talk) 16:42, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
How about meeting on the evening of 9th March in Tenerife? I'm staying out of town in the end, but Plaza Weyler's convenient for car parking. I definitely can't do 14th in the end, but can't spot a meeting page for it either yet... can I suggest closer to Easter? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:55, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
Morning @Mike Peel: sounds good to me! Later this evening (or tomorrow, depending what time I get home) I'll send you a Wikimail with my contact details and further info. 21st or 28th March would suit me for a Brighton meetup, although with a preference for 21st: I'll see what I can do (again will have to be later today or tomorrow: just a flying visit to my Talk page for now!) Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 10:12, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
28th March I can do, 21st I may or may not be able to. Thryduulf (talk) 13:27, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
It was nice to talk in Tenerife! Was the date for the next Brighton meetup decided yet? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:20, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: Good to catch up, and I hope you got back OK despite the unexpectedly bad recent weather! I was a bit tight for the return flight in the end: the bus turned up 15 minutes late at Costa Adeje, and promptly plunged into a traffic jam that lasted all the way to Los Cristianos. Very stressful! By the time I got to departures the gate was being called... anyway, all was well in the end.
@HJ Mitchell, Thryduulf, Lcawte, Acalamari, The wub, and SilkTork: (and Mike): sorry for not managing to arrange anything in Brighton so far: I've been focusing on some detailed (off-Wiki) work I need to do for a couple of presentations I'm doing later this year. The first Saturday after Easter, 11th April, is a good possibility if not too soon. 18th is also doable but less preferable for me. I then can't do any of the following 3 Saturdays, but Saturdays from 16th May onwards are good. As always, Sundays are out of the question for me unfortunately. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 13:10, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
I won't be able to do the 11th or 18th of April, but May looks better for me! Same for me about Sundays. Acalamari 17:18, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Ah, sorry, to hear that the bus timing and traffic didn't go well, but glad to hear you made it back OK! The weather this last week has been interesting, but we made the best of it. I could do 11 April, but I'm busy on 18th April. Saturdays in May from the 16th work well for me. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:59, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
I can possibly do 11th April, although 18th would be better. In May I'm definitely busy on the 16th, but the 23rd or 30th would work for me. the wub "?!" 01:04, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
I'm presently available on the 11th and 18th of April and every Saturday in May but the latter might change. Thryduulf (talk) 12:23, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
